Subject: Blood Angels - still worth the time?

Long time reader, first time poster...
I loved the Blood Angels fluff ever since the beginning but when it came time for 3rd ed they became Khorne marines. I say this because their surge forward rule became the same as World Eaters. For BA it was on 1; for WE it was a 1 or 2. Well...ever since then they became the scream and leap army for Marines. I stopped playing 40k around the arrival of 4th ed and now I am beginning to come back for 5th.
Fast forward to now, and I see that the PDF Blood Angel codex has removed the surge rule; this is good! They are still a close-quarters fighting force. With the advent of the new marine codex, are they likely to see revisions, or are they still the loyalist version of the Khorne marines still? Thoughts? Comments?

With the advent of the new Marine codex, I'm fairly sure that you still use the old pdf Blood Angels codex.
You can, however, attempt to adapt them using the new Space Marines codex as "Red Marines" - you'll lose out on the special rules (see: Death Company).

Blood Angels are extremely viable. Sternguard seem like the only really solid new choice from the new codex. Everything else is bells and whistles.

There are still a few good choices in the BA codex: most of the special characters are decent, ven dreads are a bargain, baal preds and overcharged engines are cool, death company obviously. But they took a hit on lots of things: more expensive vehicles, less transport space, 5 OR 10 man squads, more expensive tacs and assault marines, no combat tactics, inferior wargear. With the recent codex creep of orks and marines the BA are starting to get left behind.

As I see it, the best reason for taking BA is the option of using Assault Marines as troops.
Yeah, they have other nice options as more people has stated (Death Company, overcharged engines, IC...), but for me, Assault Marines as troops is the #1.

Just two things:
1. English is not my mother tongue. I´m really sorry for the misunderstandings and the kicks to the dictionary. Don´t be too hard on me, OK?
2. With the best intentions sometimes comes the worst advice. But you asked for it, didn't you? |

They are still one of the hardest Marine armies I can face off against. The Preferred Enemy combined with Furious Assault is just plain brutal.

I disagree with the above posters. Today, I'd go for vanilla Marines or Marines led by a special character from the new codex. BA is not worth the consideration as they lost most of their special rules. Jervis, shame on you.

i would go with the standard marine dex, but to stay fluffy i'd paint sternguard as death company.
after all, the DC are an elite unit that are more than capable of taking on impossible odds.
you have your furiso dread (ironclad)
havent had time to read the marine dex, but i would take meph and tyco if possible too.
as honour guard for dante i would throw him with a unit of tooled up vanguard.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor. |

Sternguard are shooty. Death Company are HTH. I don't see the connection.
I'll be glad to put my BA vs Marines anytime. I think they'll do well.

The BA Jump Pack list with lots of Vet Assault and Honor Guard are a clear strength of the BA list.
I've been saying it since the WD came oot with the list. It's an awful, AWFUL list. Not because it can't make a winning army (it can), but because the units are so imbalanced. Vet Assault and Honor Guard squads are great. Most everything else blows. It makes it hard to build anything but a Jump Pack list.

I'm going to be very interested how the Ard Boyz Finals end up. Our local BA player has done very well through the first two rounds. The army is just plain hard to deal with.
