More seems better to me...I am currently thinkang about 3 tac squads that are split into 6 scoring units. That's a goodly amount of marines the enemy MUST kill inorder to actually take an objective. Thoughts?

I was thinking along very similar lines -

3 tac squads that don't combat squad gives up only 3 KP's in those missions

In objective missions, combat squad and put the 3 demi-squads with heavy weapons on your objective(s) while the other 3 (with spec weapon and sgt) advance to capture the enemy's.

While you sleep, they'll be waiting...

Be aware that a 5 man tac squad is easy to kill if caught in the open. Just a reminder, one squad of fire warriors in rapid fire range is all it really takes.

I tend to use 2 tac squads and 1 10-woman Squad of basic Sisters of Battle with Flamer/Heavy flamer.

How bout 4x10 man tac squads in stripped down Rhino's? everyone carries a flamer, and either a ML or HB for extra firepower, park the Rhino in enemy Los, and stand on the objective, and hold.

Well, don't go overboard with the number of scoring units.
What is needed is a good mix between scoring units and units that can contest or claim objectives or take down threatening enemy units.

Would you reckon only two tactical squads in a 1500 pt army is insufficient for scoring?

Let's not forget- if you can contest the objective come the last turn, or if you can draw a unit off an objective through a strategic assault, you don't have to kill a single one of them.

In a 1750 kantor list I was thinking about running I have 4 (8) scoring units.

For ard boys I ran 4 blood angel tac squads in the first round and got first out of 18 with it.

I think, if played conservatively, that number would be fine Yu.

At 1750. 3x10 marines or scouts has felt... perfect. More than that thins out your offensive capability, less than that pushes your luck in take and hold.

I'd run 4x10 at 2500... at 2k I'd probably try and get away with 3x10 but play a cautious game with the troops.

My basic rules with Space Marines in 5th Edition are these:

I only take 10-man Tactical Squads
- this leaves Combat Squads as an option in non-KP games, and 10-man strong squads in KP games

I do not take Rhinos for Tactical Squads
- they are give-a-way kill points and my 10-man squads have Heavy Weapons they ought to be firing

I only take Transports when they have a clear battlefield role. "Random" drop pods, Rhinos, and Razorbacks have no place in a Space Marine army. You need to be delivering a specific unit to a specific place or you need to have a mass-deployment strategy (drop pod assault) to justify these purchases and the risk of Kill Points. You'll see Rhinos for my Sternguard and Razorbacks for the occasional Suicide Combat Squad (Melta, Combi-Melta).

I like to have a minimum of 2 full Tactical Squads at 1000 points and then add a third at 1500 along with some distribution of Scouts.

I am thinking of changing a bit and going with 2 x 10 tac squads with HB razors and 1 x 8 bikers. A captain on bike will make them troops and able to hold an objective as well as turbo boosting to contest. The 8 man squad can split so I still have 6 scoring units. Why the razors? for when i split and want to send the sarge and special rushing forward...the razor can act as transport or mobile cover for my running marines.
