Both. Start dark and use bright highlights to bring out the creases is the skin.

I really should be spending my time more constructively.

Dark or light, make the colour rich. Use dark green undercoat and choose a bright green to highlight. Don't add white to the paints to highlight because it'll make them seem pale, you want highlighting while retaining that rich green colour.

check a lot of the other ork-painting blogs and threads on the forum. Mine is in my sig, but there are a few better threads to get a nicer scheme. Mine is just a fast scheme (3 colours + black primer). Most of the times the better ones also do a few washes or extra colours...

too "yellowish" for a nice and cool ork....

try darkangels green and highlight with snot green and scorpion green.

if it gets too pale just wash it with watered down darkangels green or thraka green wash

GENERATION 4: The first time you see this, copy and paste it into your sig and add 1 to the number after generation. Consider it a social experiment.

LOL I do mine more laid back, I use goblin green and ink wash it with dark angels ink. Yeah they may be lighter then most orks but they still have dark green emphasis. Maybe we are desert planet orks

I Play: Orks
haven't won a game with them though

Soon to play: and either or , haven't decided.

Nice tutorial, LAD!

I tried this the other day, and I really like the effects. It was something that sprung to mind after seeing how John Blanche had approached his ork skin in the latest WD.

1. basecoat with Dheneb Stone foundation paint
2a. Wash with Gryphonne Sepia
2b. let dry
3a. Wash with Devlan Mud. If you want, keep this to the darker areas, but I just washed over the whole skin area. The color blend worked well.
3b. let dry
4. Wash with Thraka Green. Once this is dry, you can wash it again with Thraka Green for a darker tone.
5. Highlight with Gretchin Green where appropriate.

You can also vary the basecoat color. Try basecoating with Gretchin Green instead of Dheneb Stone for a darker tone at the end.

I'll try to get some pics up.

I tried the way it was done for 'A tale of 4 gamers' in the White Dwarf (Knarloc green base, Badab black wash then highlight with Snotling green) and really like it...

I do it the John Blanche way:

- basecoat Snakebite Leather
- wash Devlan Mud
- highlight with about 4:1 Snakebite : skull white
- highlight with about 3:2 Snakebite : skull white
- wash twice with Thraka Green

Feel free to mess with the highlights anyway you want - that will also add diversity between all of the orks.

Another approach would be the Reaper Master Series Triad:

That's how I'll be painting mine.
