So what do you guys think of the Defenders of Ulthuan Army that GW is selling. You basically get a 3000 point HE army for $370. I have thought about starting a HE army in the past, and this seems like a good way to get just about everything I want (not sure if I like the 3 chariots).

I currently have a Night Goblin army and would like something a bit more reliable.

It's not a bad deal or anything of the sort.

Just has alot of 'extras' you probably don't want, and not enough of the stuff you do want.

Half the figs are useless.

Archers, crap.
Chariots, crap.
Silver Helms, crap.

You need 2 more command groups for the 2 special units, so you can field 4 of them.

You need 2 dragons or none at all.

You want 4 archmages or none at all.

Same with heroes.

So I'd see myself having to buy a bunch of extra stuff to make this work out, and in the end...I'd probably have two armies.

Two of these boxes would net two armies--one based on shooting supplemented with magic, and the other with foot troops backed by heroes, dragons, chariots, and cavalry.

I was under the impression that Phoenix Guards want 15-20, the SM are better fielded in smaller numbers.

I don't really see why having maybe 2x10 archers is crap, the silver helms are not as nice as the dragon knights, but they can work. As for the chariots, I have never been into chariots, so it would be okay to have a couple of them around to play around with a bit.

4 archmage seems a bit overkill, that would be 1/3 your army for four casters, that is not even including tooling them up.

At a 28% savings, I can pick this up and still have the cash to buy the sword master command, second dragon, and even a unit of Dragon Knights.
