Saw someone reference "Army Painter" in a different thread, and was curious if anyone had any experience with their products. Tried a search, but of course "army" and "painter" come up fairly frequently in this forum, while "armypainter" doesn't at all.

I'm much more in the "gaming" side of the hobby as opposed to the "painting" side, but the game does benefit from good looking models, so I have to do my share. The webpage (http://www.thearmypainter.com/) doesn't seem to have a lot of instructions/examples, but the few it does have look fairly simple and effective, but also possible with other products? As in, I assume you could use any modeling spray paint, and a regular brown ink wash instead of their dip? Or does their stuff work differently/better?

Looking at their example of the bare chested Celt warrior, it does look like the dip does a pretty good job, judging from the before and after pictures. Should work well for my Kroot, for example.

Yes, you can get similiar results from using other wash and sprays. They just happen to package everything nice an neatly so that the colors are better color matches for figure painting and the dip/wash can be used straight out of the can.

A friend who left the hobby actually gave me a few pots of the different shades of there quick shade, now i had never dipped till this point but having to get through a load of lotr models that i was hardly that excited i turned to this stuff, and i have to say the reasults on a basic colour scheme where really good. Will see if i can upload some pictures tonight.

It is a very different look to just using brown ink though, it shades a little nicer in my opinion.

So in all, they are good if you want to head down the lazy painting route, or like me you just dont have much talent.

I have used the Armypainter dip and am very happy with the result. From flat base coat to finished model in one go making a good looking army ready for the table. However you are still better off giving it one level of high/low light for even better results.
There is no better way of getting a hoard army ready for the table quickly and looking good at the same time.

It shows I could have my army painted for the price of another army? Honestly, if I had a ton of spare money laying around, I wouldn't hesitate to pay to have my armies painted! Unless you don't understand that this is a specific product line?

But, as with most things, there's a balance between how much money you want to save and how much effort you're willing to put into it yourself. It would appear from their website that the stuff works very well, but that's how all ads present their product. I'm just curious what experience others have had with it, or if other, similar products that are already out there (inks and such) work as well for a similar price.

40K Radio did a glowing review of the paint system a couple eps back... I'm tempted to try out their Matte Varnish to see how flat it is, but otherwise the system doesn't really interest me.

I haven't used the Army Painter Quickshade, but I am currently experimenting with using some wood stain from the local hardware store. I have some "MinWax Polyshade Tudor Satin" stain and the results I'm getting look similar to pictures I've seen of minis done with the Army Painter product.

The process is the same. Dip and shake. I prefer to brush it on.

It takes about 24 hours to dry fully and it's a little glossy, so a flat matte finish is useful after the drying is done.

Ot the warstore.com the Quickshade was going for around $30 USD.
I picked up the MinWax Polyshade Tudor Satin for $9 CDN for a small 236ml can. The larger can was $16.

Update: You can see some results of the experiment at The Dip
