Whats the best way to run footslogging dire avengers?

I'm looking into more anti-horde/objective capping units for my eldar army (pathfinder and MC spam). I like the look and fluff for Dire Avengers, but am unsure how to run them.. 5man? 10man? Naked? Maxed for Combat defence?

Or am I completely wrong, with Wave Serpents being the only way to go?

Any input much appreciated

Gary

In my experience, DAs without a hardskinned transport are bolter bait. I don't think untransported DAs can be competitive.

I disagree. 6 units of DA's with bladestorm backed up with whatever else you want to toss in that list is going to hurt. Or you could take it a step further and go cheap and deep with the 6 units (i.e. no upgrades) and then add things to support them.

900 to 1100 points (depending on exarchs) for 60 models with T3 and a 4+ save?

I want some of what you're smoking, Cap K.

The premium on a unit of DAs with exarch versus a same-size unit of guardians is about the same as the cost of a transport. So if you want to spam troops, for the same 1100 points you could get 6 units of stormies with flamers in wave serpents with shuricannons. More models, more anti-horde, more mobility, and, okay, more KPs, but even so.

Units of ten guys with bladestorm, that´s for sure. But they are not really resilient, and you need to go near your enemy to make some real pain. And this usually leaves them exposed. There is when Serpents comes useful, because you don't need to find a way to protect them. You go inside the Serpent, you come out, you kill things, and if you are lucky and you don't find yourself in CC, you go back to the serpent and repeat the previous steps

There are a lot of good footslogging Eldar armies, but they tend to use Guardians. Maybe good footslogging lists can be made with DA, but it seems harder than using Serpents...

Just two things:
1. English is not my mother tongue. I´m really sorry for the misunderstandings and the kicks to the dictionary. Don´t be too hard on me, OK?
2. With the best intentions sometimes comes the worst advice. But you asked for it, didn't you?
