Subject: A question of colors...

Good day Dakka,
I have recently run into a bit of a conundrum. After years of collecting and painting my as of yet un-named Marine army bit by bit I have come to realize… I want to change color schemes. *BAH* It came to me one day while listening to my University of Wyoming Cowboys lose yet again. (They actually scored that game) So as I’m working in the garage, drinking beer, throwing things, yelling “ WTF!, ANOTHER QUARTERBACK!?!?!?!”, (switched QB’s 4 times!!!) I looked upon my poster of the good ol’ days when they actually won games. There it was, the colors, the chapter icon, the memories of the announcer saying, “Stoner to Hooker…. Touchdown!” (Yeah, I know, awesome names) After the game I sat down at my computer and came up with an icon and color scheme.
Now the problem, 80 of the 160 marines I have are painted. 10 of the 17 vehicles are painted. It’s taken me quite a while to get as far as I have. Do you think it would be worth it to go from this:
with this icon:
to this:
with my new and improved icon:
I have never had a chapter name. “Those Guys” was always the moniker given by opponents. My new chapter would be the Rough Riders.
What do you think? I truly love the brown, white, and prairie gold (yeah, yellow, I know) but what a lot of work to strip down and repaint. Or… here’s my other idea. Mix the two chapters. Kind of like when the uniform gets changed in the military. We went from the BDU’s to the new ACU’s but not everyone got the initial issue and there was a mix of the two for quite some time. Would love some C&C.
I will get a couple of photos up when I get the new scheme on a guy.

Wyoming, yeah, the big square state out west. No, that one's Colorado... just above... yeah right there, the one with Yellowstone. No, we're not Montana. |

Well, the new scheme is much nicer, but whether you want to strip all those models is a choice you've got to make yourself!

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink. |

yea stripping minis can really suck. if not done right your minis will have gobs of REALLY hard paint... glop left in the crevices. so make sure you really do your homework before doing that. also test it on a junker first. im sure the tanks would be easy-ish anyways

I have no problems stripping. I made an article here to show how to safely do it. I guess the question I'm really looking to answer is having two paint schemes in one army. Would it look dumb or should I bite the bullet and drop my painted marines into the big vat of Super Clean?

First things first, I like the new scheme. You might run into some trouble getting your bucking bronco symbol on some tiny shoulderpads, but you could try Ginfritter's, see if anything there can help.
As for stripping, I say take it one squad at a time. Staring at a table full of 150+ newly naked marines has been known to kill lesser men. Breaking the operation down into sizable chunks will help turn an overbearing project into something more manageable. I'd even suggest you go as far as painting (or at least basecoating) a stripped squad/vehicle before tossing the next batch into the sauce. Moderation!
Also, stripping say, a single tac squad will allow you to test the color scheme before you totally commit to undoing years of work.
It sounds like you're very excited about the new scheme, and it holds sentimental value. You'll be super happy with (and proud of) the force in new skin, so I say go for it.

Heh... I've already purchased the water slide transfer paper and printed out my new icon in sizes for the shoulder pads, vehicles, dreads, banners... you name it. Steamboat is going on everything!

Personally it would probably be better to have your whole army as one color. Although I wouldn't put yourself back by stripping the paint from all those marines right away. I would just go ahead and paint the rest of your army the new color, then once that is done just slowly start stripping paint from the old models and start converting them to the new paint scheme. That way at the least everything is painted even if not the color you want it to be.

Major job to repaint them all, but I think the new scheme is nicer/better. Just my opinion though - I don't have to do all the work!
