Bored at work.. time for a long post!

So.. I want to start a new army.. now that the bulk of my CSMs are done and I just have a couple of tanks to finish. I will probably be playing them the most till imperial guard get redone.

I want to do a fantasy army next. I've only played a handful of times with the new version.

I have 3000+ pts of tomb kings that are collecting dust. I think they will continue to get dusty for a while, as I've been reading rumors that they may get redone around the time they redo the Necrons for 40k, which would be a year from now or in 2010?. I don't see me adding anything to the army now other than maybe bulking up my skeleton units.

I have a little over 1000 pts for my kroot beastmen and I may try and put some lists together with the newer warriors of chaos rules till the new beast book comes out. but lately I just haven't had the urge to really add to this army. Doing all the conversions was fun, but time consuming. I think I probably wouldn't really be into these guys for a while, but maybe if I start playing with em with warrior rules I'll like em more. I've actually been thinking about selling this army, but I haven't decided yet.......

For all new armies I have 3 ideas for themes... For all 3 I would only plan on maybe 1000 pts tops.

1 is an all skink-based lizardman army.. skinks for troops, characters, rare and specials would be bigger lizards that skinks control like salamanders, etc. Just no saurus looking models I guess. Lots of little guys running all over the place with blowpipes and javelins so it would be a very shooty army. Also since lizards are next in line for the beginning of '09 I'm sure I could start building now and then have it all mostly ready to go by the time their new book comes out. I would prolly dip these guys too so I could paint em up quick.

2 is a dark elf army.. I'd paint them with blue skin and white hair like those D&D dark elves.. there would be no horses or anything like that, instead for their cavalry type models I'd use the goblin spider rider spiders (or spiders from another company) and convert them to look like those spider centaur things.

3 is a goblin army. same idea with the skink army, it would be all goblins and no orcs. This is lowest on my list because I will probably have to buy the most models for this one and painting that many rank & file guys could get tedious especially since I take so long to paint stuff now.. and I don't know if dipping would work well on them... but I think it would still be fun to make and play with.

So wadaya think? 1, 2 or 3? Or should I try and just focus on the kroot beasts for now?

I've toyed with an all skink army and a goblin 'monghol horde' army (i.e. all on wolves or chariots...and pump wagons, 'cause why not?) both at 1000 points. I think they could be a ton of fun.

So I guess either 1 or 3 for me.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

i play southlands skink.
very amusing army to play, fast, effective, but suck in combat, so run away

currently up to 12 dead greater daemons and 7 dead giants thanks to poisoned bows and blowpipes.

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor.

yeah I'm leaning most toward the skinks but I think I worry that some rules might change in the new book.. I don't wanna build an army and then have to start swapping weapons all around and redoing everything in 4 months.

keep away from skinks with bows in that case (i have 60)
but with the new armies book coming out there are alot of skink special characters. and now due to the ammount of steggadons you can take they will be competative.

from what ive herd:

skinks will be able to take spawnings, and may have minor stat upgrades.

and, the army looks cool when deployed

I used to have a goblin army (300 of the little beggars) and it was awesome fun, but I never even made a dent into painting all of them. I can't reccomend it enough for pure giggles factor.

Opinions are like arseholes. Everyone's got one and they all stink.

I think I will probably go with the skinks I figure even with the new rules coming... they're not gonna change the general skinks in the book too much as far as weapons go.. or else they'll have to redo the models and all. I can probably get a box or 2 and start building and then I'll have the bulk of my force done at least, then I can pick up the new rules and models when they come out. I'm thinking one box I'd do all javelins, and the other would be all blowpipes. Do they get a full command like other units? or am I better off just using all generic skinks for the units with little to no upgrades?

I also want it to be a fun modeling project.. I want to try and go with aquatic bases using water effects or clear resin.. maybe I'd snip off all of their feet and just glue the bottom of their legs to the base and try and make it look like they're standing in shallow water.. or I'd make a few bases with just lily pads with a blowpipe poking out from under them, like there's a little guy under the water sneaking up on someone. stuff like that

Necros, do you know if the upcoming Lizardmen releases include new plastic skinks? I wonder if you may really like the potential upcoming models more than the current ones, and would be kicking yourself if you made an army of figures that you were only so-so on, after seeing new ones. This is of course assuming that there ARE new skink models in the pipeline...

I suppose that if new models were released that you liked you could still use the new ones as a different unit or something like that. I just wonder if it might be better to wait a bit and see what transpires with the new stuff.

The all gobbo army would be pretty keen, I think, though I really think the all skink army is really a fun idea too. The Battle for Skull Pass gobbos would be really easy to get a hold of on ebay for relatively cheap, I think. Maybe I am wrong on that.

I don't think that an all gobbo army would be too difficult to paint with the new washes and foundation paints. Paint the robes a dark grey, then wash with the Badab Black wash, and you'd have the robes done really fast. The skin would just need Gretchin Green with a Thraka Green wash, or Devlan Mud... A toof here and an eye there... I dunno. Maybe I just really dig the little buggers.

I know whatever you choose would look great though! Good luck.

Well the current skinks were done with the last army book version, right? I'm guessing they were so they wouldn't be making new ones so quick.. I figured they would keep the current models and then make new ones like the rumored cavalry skinks and stuff like that.

Either way, I probably wouldn't be starting these guys till around xmas time anyway and there will probably be more concrete info by then. I have enough projects on deck at the moment to keep me busy till then

Eventually, I will probably do all 3 of these armies, all around 1000 pts. I figure that way I can do the conversions and themes I want to do, and my group usually plays small games anyway.. if I wanted a big one I could just run 2 lists or save my tomb kings for that...
