Hey, so I'm planning on buying an I.G army in the near future, probably playing primarily against Chaos (since I'm only near like two other people who play). Does anypeoples have any tips/strategies that they've found work particularly well against Chaos armies?

IG are sort of in limbo now, as they are getting a new codex next spring. However you do need the following items to deal with chaos:
Meltas and/or lascannons for dealing with landraiders
Plasma/Melta/lascannons for dealing with plague marines
and termies
Heavy bolters/battle cannons/etc for dealing with power armor
enough mobility to claim objectives.
Two LRBTs with hull heavy bolter and no sponsons and two small infantry platoons with las/plas in the line squads are a great start to any IG army. Command sections can take meltas for anti-tank work, or flamers for anti-infantry.

I know this will sound unintentionally flip, but, don't buy an IG army right now, wait.
For several reasons: they are incredibly handicapped right now because of the massive handicap given out to vehicles and low T low Sv infantry in CC. Its a significant issue that makes winning any mission very difficult. Taking ground is very hard for the IG in objective based games and conserving kill pionts is even worse in KP missions.
I suggest you construct ANY other army right now instead. But at least, wait for the new IG dex. This said from a long time IG player, they don't have any particularly good combos right now. Maybe if you're in a fun group, and you don't mind loosing most games. Or if you are in it for the modeling.
Also if painting 100+ models doesn't appeal to you, certainly pick something else.

I'm with Augustus on this. If you really want to play, then don't bother, but trying to play your first game without having half your guys little slips of paper when you know that your perfect build will be nothing but a sidenote of a sidenote of a sidenote in the history of GW sidenotes is really depressing.

Yeah. I agree. And what most people suggest is easily thwarted by the right, and pretty common list.
2 Lash Sorcerers

A ton of Oblits
This army will shoot you tanks to death, assault it's way up the field into your heavy weapons teams, and hold all of the objectives as long as they're in cover.

Cool, thanks for all the input. I'm seeing a lascannon/plasmagun trend going on, so I'll probably include those, if not the Plasmagun then meltas (they're cheaper anyway)
Yeah I was intending to wait for the new codex to come out in any event, and yes I can totally handle painting 100 + models, that's half the fun of it. I was, however, thinking about playing a Chaos Army dedicated to Nurgle if the whole I.G thing doesn't work out (my first loyalty is to Chaos anyway).

To the thread poopers:
Hay guyz, don't play an army because you like the theme.
I can see how many IG platoons and leman russ tanks will become obsolete with the new codex. I can also see how heavy weapons platforms will change so drastically that lascannons will be worthless when the new codex comes out.
No one is talking about Ogryn, ratlings or other things that will change. GW is not going to suddenly make IG this super close combat monster where all their lasguns are defunct.
High Commisar,
As was said before me, Leman Russ tanks, basilisks, plasma and lascannons will be good against chaos. Also, volume of fire will be awesome from Lasguns. I have killed more terminators with lasguns than lascannons.

Take inquisitorial allies. A Daemonhunter Inquisitor with a psychic hood and a Land Raider runs you about 325 points and shuts down the Lash builds pretty hard. Then you can fill in with line platoons, drop vets with plasma, and Leman Russ [Demolishers] and you'll be able to pick them apart at range.

I agree with clams. DH with a hood is sooo helpful against lash builds.
Dropping vets with special weapons is also great against power armor.
A minimum sized squad with all meltas or all plasmas is AWESOME.
Your opponent won't know what hit him and its super cheap in points.

yeah, I guess you're right. However, if I really wanted to argue further I could say that 9 obliterators would take up 175 more points than a baneblade (although I suppose 9 obliterators would pretty well match a baneblade)...but I'm not going to do that anyway, because this is a thing we could argue about all day, and I've got a bunch of homework to do.

So hold on a sec, would that Daemonhunter thing be included in the codex, or no?
Once again thanks for all the advice, guys. Sounds like I'll be including vets with big scary heavy weapons and stuff, and LRBT Demolishers, because you guys sound like you know your s**t.

The Daemonhunter Inquisitor Lord is in the Daemonhunters codex, along with the rules for "By The Authority of the Immortal Emperor of Mankind" which allows Imperial armies to ally with each other. It is a huge boon to Imperial Guard armies, because you can typically find something that compensates for your typical list weakness.

Ill chime in that I think a large squad or two of rough riders make for an excellent counter charge. The models stink but I use the cheaper Imperial Outriders/Pistoliers set for fantasy and basically just add lances and pistols to them. They look really cool, and much better than the Genghis Khan guys who dont really look like they belong with any other part of your army. Give them all hunting lances and give the sgt a power weapon.

Why would a good guard army care about Lash?
"oh no, you moved one of my 50 squads closer to you, or one of the 20 occupying objectives off of it!"
Lash is great at moving a 30 ork boy mob into template formation, or 10 veteran marines into plasma cannon formation/terminator assault range.
1 of 50 10-man units of guardsmen that will just die horribly? Not so much.
And with enough models, you can surround the unit you want to protect, making it somewhat immune to lash as you can't move through friendly models with it.

Good point, even though technically 50 10 man squads would be 500 guardsmen...but we get you're point. My army will probably have 15 10 man squads, probably less as I'll be including stormtroopers and such....how many points does one guardsman (not conscript, understand) cost?
