ok, just a few questions before i think about starting a LoTD army.
1: Favoured weapons? (heavy, special and CC)
2: Favoured units? (says it all)
3: leader (Vulkan, to keep up the fire theme?)
on the modeling side of things:
paint scheme will be the basic LoD colours.
its details im stuck on, i am going to file down the front of the feet and GS into skeletal toes.
they will have heavy battle damage.
rib cage decorations moulded into thier chest plates (GS again)
and now im stuck, what other specifics should i include?

Suffused with the dying memories of Sanguinus, the warriors of the Death Company seek only one thing: death in battle fighting against the enemies of the Emperor. |

The battle damage and skeleton toes thing is new to the look with the upcoming Forge World stuff, in the past they were just black armored marines with lots of skulls and bones and flames molded onto the outside of their armor.
If you want a Vulkan counts-as leading them, I'd model him up holding a human skull with three studs on the forehead as his flamer thing. It's an old special character of theirs who used the skull of an unknown space marine captain as a weapon.

It's what the new Forge World figs have done. Removed parts of the helmet to show a skull under it, as well as other parts of the armor to show a skeleton.

That's Sergeant Centurius, and his Animus Malorum.
Up until that point, the Legion had been described as having no discernable command structure. Then Centurius came along, and third edition after that added in a complete army list with ICs added in.
So far as other specifics... traditionally, they've had bones modelled onto the armour over the coresponding armour section. So thigh bones moulded onto thighs, and the like. Not all over, just a here and there sort of thing.
Skull-styled helmets work well. Shoulder pads tend to have a skull-and-crossbones motif, or moulded bones replacing the edge trim. Flames can be either sculpted or painted on... I generally prefer the painted look myself, but opinions vary.

thanks insaniak.
i prefer paited flames too, but bones have to be moulded into the armour
just need some thoughts: things like cutting the arms at the wrist and elbow and adding a skeletal arm? or just not bother with that?

what ill do is paint up a test mini (i should have a marine somwhere) then work on converting once the tac squads arrive.

It is indeed! Well...sort of!
I bought a whole bunch of the VC Skeletal Warriors sets actually. You get about 10-15 various skelly head bits, shoved one of them in there, drybrushed it with bleached bone and then did a small wash of Ogryn Flesh on it.
As for the flames, I'll be honest, it takes quite a few layers to really nail it but here's the quick and dirty way:
Start with a layer of blood red, maybe mixed with a tiny bit of Blazing orange to brighten it a bit.
Then on top of that use a mixture of Blood Red/Blazing Orange/Sunburst Yellow/Skull white to make the final top layer of the flames by painting it at the "Core" of the flame where it's brightest. And you should be on your way!
Hope this helps.

you paint flames and bone the hard way
i paint white flames to start with, then blend ink in, gives a nice and easy result.
with bone its just bleached bone, brown ink, then bleached bone and skull white highlights.
