21 or 20 Saurus with Spears. They also have the Spawning of Chotec. I will probably try this my next game.

7x3, with or without a Character, with or without 21 full models. They hold a flank/ form a core with everything else fast coming in from the side. So they are in the middle with maybe Jungle Swarms beside them holding the far flank.

They march up, being scary. If they get charged they fight back. If they want to charge they can reform, making it 5x4.

So 5x4 they get ... +1 from ranks. But 7x3 they get ... 2 + 2 + 7 = 11 more attacks in, or else 8 more attacks. And more importantly, they are cool.

This is compared to the old way where you could from 6 to 4.

The other option is putting a character in there and bumping up the models. Basically this is one hard unit and everything else is shooty/ fast. I do not have many models (no Salamanders or Kroxigors, for instance) but I do have 32 Saurus so I like to fit them in.

Looks like it would work fine. If I ever get around to getting Eternal Guard for my Wood Elves I plan on running them 7 x 3.

No, reforming takes all of your movement. So unless you have a spell that lets you charge in the magic phase, if you reform that's as far as you are moving that turn.

7x3 with spears is good though. Especially for High Elves.

You get a US of 21, so you outnumber that 'standard' size formation. Seven wide means all attack, in every rank for the elves.

For non eleves the all-get-to-attack bonus is not there, yor third rank is dumb, so why not add a fourth dumb rank too. However 5x4 loses fourth rank quickly. zx3 is durable and has other benefits.

7x3 is good for any spearmen, try 7x4 if you have cheap units, and all but mandatory for High Elf Spearmen. Saurus, I am not too sure, but do try it.

If you want a 5x4 go hand weapon and shield.

Its good until you get combi charged by chariots or bretonnian lances...

I managed to get 3 beastmen chariots into a saurus unit like you are suggesting and smashed it to smitherines.

Just be aware there are units/ combo units that will tear this unit a new one...

if you are giving them a spawning i would go with sotek, simply for the large ammount of attacks you gain in the 1st round (you dont want to be stuck in combat)

I like Chotec, you get an extra dice for when you run them down. Good times.

I could be wrong, but doesn't the whole formation have to attack with the same weapon? And using spears reduces the attacks to 1? So you'd just be losing less to casualties, and would be able to use a shield meaning you'd be taking more casualties.

The front rank would still get its predatory fighter attak.
