The rule about units made up of models with more than one base size? There used to be a rule about a units with mixed base sizes... i.e. The Grail Reliquae has a buncha US1 based pilgrims, and a US6 Chariot sized dead guy on a sawhorse carried by 6 pilgrims all on one base... and it used to say that basically the 2x3 size of the Reliquae itself counted as 2 pilgrims wide by 3 deep, thus completing those ranks for rank bonuses... And this also applied to other cases, like the Fey Enchantress on her double wide Unicorn, with her unit of Grail Guard. But for the life of me I can't seem to find it anymore. Anyone know where it is now?

My WHFB armies were Bretonians and Tomb Kings.

Not exactly:

While you would get a full second rank for:
C=Cavalry model, F = US1 Man on Foot.

CFFFF
CFFFF
FFFFF

As the cavalry model is a model in both ranks the situation I was looking for was more like:

L=Large Base Model, F= US1 Man on Foot

FFFFF
FLLLF
FLLLF
FFFFF

Or the like... for example the Slann with his guard, the Grail Reliquae, the Fey Enchantress, and so forth.. models which are wider than one model in the unit...

Would those extra wide models count as the number of models they displace like in 6th, or would you have to do

FFFFF
FLLLFFF
FLLLFFF
FFFFF

Or what? They answered this in Chronicles 2004 for 6th Ed, but appear to have forgotten about it in 7th again.

I've never been sure if a black orc heroes can lead goblins, one is 25mm base, other is 20mm. Doesn't mention anything in the O&G book. But i guess if 25mm x 50mm cavalry heroes can lead 20mm troops (eg.HE), then they must be able to

This is the single biggest editing failure of 7th edition.

In 6th edition, there was an extremely clear article in White Dwarf, with nice diagrams and lovely pictures, clearly spelling out how it works. Said article was also reprinted in Warhammer Chronicles. Then this nice and oft-consulted section was completely forgotten about when 7th was drawn up, resulting in this question coming up on internet message forums EVERY SINGLE TIME A NEW PLAYER STARTS PLAYING THE GAME.

Sigh.

Sorry to shout.

Here’s what it boils down to:

25mm and 20mm bases are considered interchangeable, in terms of ranking up. You’re still supposed to use the appropriate base for the model, but a 20mm model in a unit with 25mm bases counts as one regular dude for ranking purposes, and vice versa. Yes, this can present modeling challenges, and a lot of folks build their movement trays with a little extra room to allow for it.

With the above guideline in mind, a larger-based model in a smaller-based unit counts (for rank purposes only) for as many spaces as their base takes up.

So a character on a cavalry mount (25mm x 50mm base) in an infantry unit (either 20mm or 25mm square bases), counts as one model wide and two deep for rank purposes. A character on a big monstrous mount (50mm base) counts as two models wide and two models deep in an infantry unit.

Makes sense b/c they are US 2 so they fill 2 spots in rank & file

Mannahnin is that actually a rule somewhere, or is that a house rule based on past rules that made sense?

While this is how it is commonly played it is not correct based on the rules. The rule book indicates that a model only counts as one model in each rank. This indicates to me that a model on a 50mmx50mm will only count as one model in the first and second rank. So your formation should look something like this.

PPHHPP
PPHHPP
PP.P.PP
PP.P.PP

The above gives you 5 models in each rank and does not violate any of the rules in the rulebook. Thus with a unit of Plaguebares with a Herald on a Palanquin you would need 18 models to get full rank Bonus rather than 16 as Mannahnin has stated. This is the best way to avoid conflict during a tournament game but in casual play many people still use the old rules.

In 7th ranks are determined by the number of models in each rank not the number of spaces that are taken up.

Negative Money is correct by the letter of the rules. But no one I have ever met plays that way.

Just like hills are technically true LOS according to the book, but virtually every WH player on earth plays them as completely blocking LOS to any unit behind them, regardless of relative height.
