Highlord with a Blackstone Fortress

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

I have a Fire Support dread, old metal model with lascannon and missile launcher and will soon have a Black Reach dread.

My question for today is omitting venerable and extra armour worth the savings. For the Black Reach dread I might upgrade the heavy flamer, but might just keep it at minimum price. It has a multi melta, so be it, I have the bits to convert to an assault cannon, but am thinking of not bothering. As far as I see it this model is an add-on to my army for a bit of a change and rarely can I afford the points to tool it up.

What do you think, in my case and/or in isolation. Can you go cheap with a dreadnought and get value from it?

n'oublie jamais - It appears I now have to highlight this again.

It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion. By the juice of the brew my thoughts aquire speed, my mind becomes strained, the strain becomes a warning. It is by tea alone I set my mind in motion.

Extra armor is definitely not worth 15 points. Venerable can be nice against certain armies, but I'd also say not generally worth it. Ironclads or DakkaDreads are the only ones I bother taking.

I find extra armour to be pretty worth it, especially with a Venerable as you have a better chance of getting a result that ultimately does not harm you IE being able to move.

If I lose it is because I had bad luck, if you win it is because you cheated.

If you're going with fire support, remember that a Venerable Dreadnought also gives you a BS5 for more accurate shooting.

I still like taking mine with Lascannons, it may be 10 points more than the old dex but having the anti tank gun and the limited combat option is still worth it imo, on Vens i think just give them Plasma Cannons BS5 means you can be slightly more accurate with them, never taken Extra Armour on dreads dont think i ever will, i still dont think its worth the points you pay

I always run my dreads naked. To me the pros do not outweigh the cons. All those extra points could be used better elsewhere in your army

Yeah but a lot of DakkaDread fire support models are sporting Twin-Linked weaponry. In that situation, the difference in hit % between a regular dread and a venerable is something like single digits.

My cheap ass dread is a normal dread with TL H.Flamer and another H.Flamer. It drops down in a pod and, toasts a bunch of stuff and we wait and see what happens on their turn.

Total package 150 points.

What do you use for the Twin-linked Heavy Flamethrower?

I took the the melta-gun arm off of the AOBR dread, cut off the nozzle. I then took two Sentinal heavy flamers and attached them to the arm. One is just the nozzle to replace the cut off melta nozzle, the other is set next to it and I green stuffed some hoses together.

Here is a WIP pic.

The finished product looks like this, unfortunatly the finished pics that I have don't have a good angle to show the flamers very well.

That's a really decent looking model.
