I'm brand new to 5th edition... haven't even played any games with it yet. That said... I've been trying to come up with a new 2000 point army list for my Space Marine chapter and this is what I'm currently toying with. Advice and suggestions are most welcome. My main opponents are Imperial Guard and Orks.

HQ

Space Marine Captain (145 pts)
- Relic Blade
- Artificer Armour
***Captain leads Command Squad***

Command Squad (200 pts)
- Company Champion
- Apothecary
- Storm Shield
- Power Weapon
- Dedicated Razorback Transport [twin linked heavy bolters]

Troops

Tactical Squad Alpha (170 pts)
- 10 marines, Missile Launcher, Flamer

Tactical Squad Bravo (170 pts)
- 10 marines, Missile Launcher, Flamer

Scout Squad Charlie (85 pts)
- 5 Scouts, 4 sniper rifles, 1 Heavy Bolter with Hellfire Rounds

Elites

Terminator Squad Epsilon (235 pts)
- 5 Terminators
- Assault Cannon
- Chainfist

Terminator Assault Squad Omicron (450 pts)
- 5 Terminators with Thunder Hammers & Storm Shields/Twin Lightning Claws
- Dedicated Land Raider Transport

Fast Attack

Land Speeder Squadron (100 pts)
- 2 Land Speeders with Heavy Bolters

Assault Squad (115 pts)
- 5 marines
- Power Weapon

Heavy Support

Devastator Squad (160 pts)
- 5 Marines
- 2 Lascannons

Predator (85 pts)
- Autocannon Turret
- Heavy Bolter Sponsons

Whirlwind (85 pts)

Here goes

1)Not enough vehicles to prevent them from being blown away early by anti-tank fire.

2)lots of KP's on the table and some easy ones at that. Your 5 scouts, 5 assault marines, and 5 devastators are easy points.

3)I'd drop the dev's. For 20 more points you could get 2 typhoons w/heavy bolters which would give you 4 anti-tank shots a turn or 4 blasts w/6 HB shots.

4)I'd either find the points to mount the tactical squads or define their role better.

5)love the whirlwind and i'm iffy about the pred but at that point cost it can't be all bad. I also like the HB speeders.

Just some quick thoughts

You're probably right on this... I just don't really have many more vehicles in my collection. I have an extra Predator Annihilator and two dreadnoughts... not sure if that would be good or bad to try and incorporate.

I haven't fully read the kill points section of the rulebook so I hadn't really taken it into account with the army design.

Is it a good idea to drop the extra strength of the lascannons for missile launchers? One of my friends likes to tote around a lot of Leman Russ Battle Tanks and that 14 front armour is a royal pain in the butt to deal with. That said... I do like the Typhoons... but is 4 skimmers in the army good or a liability? (including the current heavy bolter variants).

I could drop the Predator or the Landspeeders w/heavy bolters to mount the Tactical squads in Rhinos. Don't Rhinos die super duper easy though? (I've never had much experience with transports).

If I owned more Whirlwinds... I'd put them in the army . I figured the same thing about the Predator too... it seems pretty inexpensive for what it brings in terms of firepower. I like the HB speeders too... but maybe I should upgrade them to Typhoons? I suppose I probably have too many Terminators but I really really like the models and they have always performed well for me in the past.

not a lot of troops...maybe drop squad Epsilon and grab 2 rhinos for the squads Sure they are thin skinned APCs but the get your guys around the board to grab objectives, but if and when they blow, its cover...
switch the pred with the LC version, 3 lascannons will kill a Russ unless the gods frown on your rolls...
if your running a pred Annihilator you can drop the heavy weapons squad and make the assault squad 10 man, and add to the scout squad... a few more figs on the board always helps.
and do you have attack bikes with Multimeltas? 50 points a pop. they can rush across the board and blow somehting big and heavy with the MM...

Jep'ray, I don't have any attack bikes so unfortunately that's out. I've tinkered with the list though to add more tactical marines and heavy weapons as well as two rhinos for moving troops around. Here's what I've come up with and I do think it looks a lot better.

HQ

Space Marine Captain (145 pts)
- Relic Blade
- Artificer Armour
***Captain leads Command Squad***

Command Squad (200 pts)
- Company Champion
- Apothecary
- Storm Shield
- Power Weapon
- Dedicated Razorback Transport [twin linked heavy bolters]

Troops

Tactical Squad Alpha (215 pts)
- 10 marines, Missile Launcher, Flamer, Stormbolter (Sgt), Dedicated Rhino

Tactical Squad Bravo (215 pts)
- 10 marines, Missile Launcher, Flamer, Stormbolter (Sgt), Dedicated Rhino

Tactical Squad Charlie (185 pts)
- 10 marines, Plasma Cannon, Plasma Gun

Elites

Terminator Squad Epsilon (235 pts)
- 5 Terminators
- Assault Cannon
- Chainfist

Fast Attack

Land Speeder Squadron (180 pts)
- 2 Land Speeders with Heavy Bolters and Typhoon missile launchers

Assault Squad (115 pts)
- 5 marines
- Power Weapon

Heavy Support

Devastator Squad (175 pts)
- 5 Marines
- 2 Lascannons
- 1 Missile Launcher

Land Raider (250 pts)

Whirlwind (85 pts)

it looks better, more effective units on the board...now lots of transports to get to objectives or just plain charge the enemy...still wish you could have a full assault squad and the scouts with sniper rifles?
for tactics, try running the rhinos together, literaly side by side, they can advance and block LOS as they do, if a rhino gets fraged, you have cover... anyways 20 marines on a target/objective is better than 10...
