I have seen a few folks post pictures of models held togeather with something called Blu-Tac. I assume this is a non-hardening soft and squishy temporary bonding agent.

Is there any difference between this, and say.. Silly Putty or Play Doh?

If I wanted some, should I hit a craft store, or an autoparts place?

Once I use it, how long will it hold parts?

Is it re-usable?

Thanks in advance, and apologies for my many questions..

its pretty much the same as GS, but cant be sculpted to any extent and will never dry.

stationary stores will sell it.
failing that alot of DIY stores will.

You can find it most stationary stores, it's usually used to hand posters.

It's a sticky putty that never hardens, good for holding models together for test poses or for emergency repairs.

Any good stationary store should have it. I'm not sure if its a sepcifically UK product or US as well. Perhaps you chaps have a different name for the same sort of product.

As for how long it will hold things, depends on the weight etc, suffice to say that a tiny amount keeps my posters up for years

Yup, completely re-usable, although after years of use a blob does become hard and less sticky/squishy.

EDIT: Gratz to KK and JD for getting in there before me

The worlds blutack supply comes from a single mine in australia.

The miners start with a small bit, and dab it on the walls of the mineshaft, gradually getting more of the tac to stick to their initial blob.

After years of working in the mine they all get permanently blue fingers, - this has led to a shortage of miners, as they find it hard to get new recruits, despite the astonishingly high wages. This is why the cost of blu tack is getting so high, and the supply may soon run out.

ALWAYS recycle your blu tack, as one day we won't have anymore.

What will YOU say to your children when they ask "Daddy, what WAS blu tack?," and "Daddy, why do my posters keep falling off the wall?"

The days of our blu tack dependant society are numbered!

And to think we used to make phallic shapes out of blu tac and throw them at the teacher...

Erm... You don't mine blu-tack.
It's refined from unobtanium ore, usually found close to the feeding grounds of the legendary drop bears.

To the op, it's just a poster putty used to attach things to walls temporarily. Most stationery stores should have it (or something similar).

As far as I know, Blu-Tac is the British term for it. The American equivalent is sold under several different brand names (none of which i can remember at this time) and is usually white. It's often used to hold posters to walls and similar tasks. In my experience, the British Blu-Tac is far superior to the American stuff.

That could be what we know as "U-tac" here to distinguish it from the grey-ish blu-tac. Both do the job.

Blu-tac is a Bostik registered trademark. They are an adhesive company. A stationery store will know what you are after.

You can get this Tac basiclly anywhere, and it comes in many colors. Like everyone else is saying its normally used to hang posters to walls (Alot in school actually). Just walk down the "Crafts & Crayola Crap" Isle of your local Wall-Mart or Some other super market.

I personally use GS, it takes a while to dry, and you only need a tiny blob.

A cheap equivilent to green stuff for a very poor man is sculpted blue tack covered in super glue and then dipped in water. Good luck.

Blu-tac is good for test fits of parts, before you decide on how you want it glued.

It's also good for sticking crap up to walls, onto your computer monitor, etc. It's crap as a permanent putty.
