Hi all.
I'm well aware that under 4th Ed, tank hunter was FAQ'd to clarify that it couldn't be used on living metal.
This is not in the 5th Ed Necron FAQ.
This is what I know.
I think it says in the Necron codex (don't have it to hand) that Living metal doesn't allow any addition dice to the penetration roll.
Does tank hunter still get nerfed by living metal?
Let me know what your opinions on this are.
Cheers

Tank hunter no longer exists for marines. Is there any other army that has something like tank hunter?

Good question. Tank Hunter is still an option for a tactical squad in an army led by Sicarius, so GW will need to FAQ it again. Until they do, I'd imagine using the 4th edition FAQ as a precedent (i.e. Tank Hunter gets nerfed by Living Metal) is the best bet.

tank hunters is a USR.
why wouldnt you get tank hunters VS living metal?
from the necron codex under the monolith entry.
living metal: attacks which count the targets armour value as being less than it really is (such as blasters and bright lances) do not do so against a monolith. similarly, weapons that get additional armour penetration dice (such as chainfists, monstrous creatures or melta weapons) do not get the extra dice against the monolith.
tank hunters neither changes the armour value of the target nor grants an additional die.

the reason you wouldnt have been able to use tank hunters againts a monolith is that the 4ed necron FAQ said that it didnt work (as the OP so nicely pointed out)
in the new FAQ it isnt there so you can gain the +1 to armour penetration rolls from tank hunters.

@ Datadep5 - Firedragons still get tank hunter if their exarch takes it.
Any more points?

I just want to point out that what you've posted here is the first printing of the rule which has since been amended in the 2nd printing of the codex:
"Attacks which count the targets armour value as being less than it really is (such as bright lances and blasters) do not do so against a monolith. Similarly, weapons that get additional Armour Penetration dice (such as chainfists, monstrous creatures or melta weapons) do not get the extra dice against the Monolith. Ordnance weapons still roll 2D6 for Armour Penetration and select the highest score. In practice, any weapon attacking the Monolith will roll for armour penetration using its unaugmented strength and a single D6 no matter what."
That final sentence does cast some ambiguity onto this issue, but I do agree that with the removal of the tank hunter question from the FAQ the rules do seem to support allowing bonuses to the penetration roll as long as they aren't specifically Strength bonuses (which Tank Hunter is not).

Furious Charge is in.
It affects the strength of the MODEL/UNIT, not the weapon.

yeah from 4th to 5th edtion they have drasticly restricted who can even take tank hunter ability. Fire dragons are the only thing i can think of that have it.

Hi everyone,
I thought I would add my tuppence worth here. Under 4th GW made the rule clarification via the FAQ. To me this is because tank hunter essentially allows an increase or bonus to the armour penetration roll. So tank hunter allows say a lascannon to hit at strength 9, roll a die and then add 1 to that penetration roll.
The living metal rule states 'any weapon attacking the monolith will roll for armour penetration using it's unaugmented strength and a single D6 no matter what'. Tank hunter meant you weren't just using strength and a single D6 roll. Hence the clarification.
After reading the wording of the 4th and 5th edition rules I can't see any change in the rule that would make things different. The Necron codex hasn't changed so why would it suddenly be ok to get a bonus in penetration?
Since the rules haven't changed and we haven't had a FAQ to say tank hunter now works I would say the original clarification holds true. Tank hunter does not work against living metal. Weapon strength and a single D6... no matter what

hi all
I agree with Brother Bundu on this one
the fact that the wording on both rules have not changed from 4th to 5th and the "no matter what" thing leaves enough doubt that I would not try to claim the tank hunter bonus
I would like to see a clarification back in the FAQ though.... I wont hold my breath

One thing I would like to point out is that you are using a rules precedent from 4th Edition. 4th Edition rules have no relevance in 5th.
Both rules systems are completely independant.
Also the original clarification ( FAQ) no longer exists so i'd say it can't hold true unless we are playing 4th edition.
I'll play it the way you guys are saying however I do disagree with the interpretation.

Since it was removed from the FAQ, and since Tank Hunter does not a)reduce the AV, b) add extra penetration dice, or c) augment the strength of the weapon, it seems likely to me that Tank Hunter does work now. That last sentence make it slightly ambiguous, but I think Tank Hunter should work. If they meant it not to, wouldn’t they have left that question in the FAQ?
