Hi, im ultramarine1. Im kinda new here but i got a question. I wanna know your guys opinions on wich chapter a new player should play. This is for a friend, as i already play ultramairnes. He wants to play a chapter with its own charater in the new sm codex, but only one with a good IC. Any opinions?('')('');('');

I would suggest Doom Legion or Hawk Lords for a new player/painter (if he's new to that also). Both chapters are regular marine forces (not DA, BA, BT) but their paint schemes are both simple (silver with green trim, or purple with gold on pg. 112) and you can help him build similar lists because you'll be using the same codex. He can then use any IC he wants to lead his force and rename him. I suggest he use Sicarius or Cassius, just call em Bob and Joe.

Just my two cents.

Remember, as described on page 127 of the SM codex, the special characters presented in the SM codex are meant to represent basic character archetypes and can be used in any chapter by simply giving them a new name of your choice.

So your friend should play the Chapter that captures his imagination from a background/modeling perspective. How he chooses to field this army (and his choice of Special Characters) should have no impact whatsoever on this choice.

It's usually (I find) a good idea to not actually paint one of the established chapters, rather a minor one or one of your own devising. This has the advantage of allowing you to use any marine codex (Wolves, Blood/Dark Angels, Codex etc) without the restrictions inherent if you picked, say, the Ultramarines. Hence why I collect the Sons of Orpheon, rather than the Ultramarines (which is what i originally wanted to collect).

And as Yak said, characters like Lysander, Tigerius etc can be used in any Codex Space Marines army, you simply give them a different name, and you're all good. The Ultramarines are not the only chapter with an extremely gifted psyker after all, neither are the Imperial Fists the only ones with a Captain in Terminator Armour with a Thunder Hammer. Tigerius just becomes Keeper Faelion of the Sons of Orpheon etc.

Tell your friend to go do some research and pick the background and paint scheme he likes best.

Guys, looked up doom eagles. seemed like a really depressed group of marines
just to give you an idea, here is a quote by a marine of t5heirs( from lexicanium.)
All of creation suffers, young ones. Only in accepting our own mortality can we make a difference. Only in bearing the burden of our failures can we find the strength to go on. Only in detachment from glory, or honour, or jealousy... from life itself can we hope to spare others from grief.

We are Doom Eagles. And we are dead already.

lmao thats really the best way to put it. tell your friend to stop being a mansy pansy, and create his own chapter and color schemes already. it really annoys me when people pick the already created chapters for the simple fact that they cant think of something original. tell um to get creative and then use any IC he wants but rename him something cool like.... Captain Somethingcool

and new to painting isnt a bad thing. everyone is new at it some time or another. tell him to think up some easy colors to start with. like say, black and grey. base the marines black(with a spray can if he REALLY is affraid of painting) then buy GOOD detail brushes because you cannot get skimpy on the brushes. learned that the hard way, anywho then pick out the grey. thats an example just plan out the colors first tho it makes it easier. also there is a chapter color program on C&C that lets you color up a SM. pretty handy and a good way to kill an hour

Tell your friend to play the Silver Skulls. I almost made a Silver Skull army, but then I accidently painted my entire army as Ultramarines, so that didn't quite work out. But I always wonder what might have been. Or did I?

I'd have Relictors if I could do marines again. I prefer Black Templars for a standard force.

Not happy with the retconning of the Relictors in the new 'Dex. Mine are still the outcast, demon weapon-wielding, Grey Knight pinatas of the old Chapter Approved series.

if you want my personal opinion, id say the Raven Guard.. fairly easy paint scheme, wicked IC, seriously awesome fluff (IMO).

plus, they now have their own forum where, if your friend chooses them, he can ask advice on painting, army lists, fluff questions, etc..... yes, that was some seriously shameless advertising of the forum that i myself am a part of, but what can you do??

Have him make up a Space Sharks chapter. They are pretty badass and he will be pretty Unique, since hardly anybody plays them.

Also, I agree with some of the above posters. Have him make his own army so he can paint them how he wants. He will be a lot happier.

+1 for Space Sharks....

Because noone else plays them, they were in the Badab war so have history.

And Bell of Lost souls has done logo sheets for them so you can make your own transfers.

I think Space Sharks are becoming more common, actually.
Not that they're anywhere near a "common" chapter, but they're not the most obscure one around.

They have a cool color scheme, a cool symbol, and a cool name, so what else could you ask for?

Anuvver fing - when they do sumfing, they try to make it look like somfink else to confuse everybody. When one of them wants to lord it over the uvvers, 'e says "I'm very speshul so'z you gotta worship me", or "I know summink wot you lot don't know, so yer better lissen good". Da funny fing is, arf of 'em believe it and da over arf don't, so 'e 'as to hit 'em all anyway or run fer it.

I lot of people think they are still dumb, even though they are pretty awesome.

Minotaurs would be another obscure one to go with. Badab War had some obscure and forgotten chapters I am noticing.....
