I was wondering what people here think is the optimal size for bike squads if you want to run them as a troop choice but not split them into combat squads. Off the top of my head I am thinking three bikers (including the sergeant) and attaching an attack bike. Three to four of these units for the core with a captain or Khan on a bike with the mounted command squad for HQ. This part of the list would look something like this:
Khan or Captain on bike (Captain w. relic blade & Hellfire rounds + digi-weapons)
Command squad on bikes, all with storm shields, 2x flamer, 2x lightning claw & power fist
Librarian on bike w. Gate
3x bikes w. 2x meltagun & power fist, attack bike w. multi-melta
3x bikes w. 2x meltagun & power fist, attack bike w. multi-melta
3x bikes w. 2x flamer & power fist, attack bike w. heavy bolter
Maybe take one more bike squad if the points are there. I would also add one three man squad of scout bikers all with grenade launchers and a locator beacon.

You need bigger bike squads before they will count as troops as the attack bike only counts as two models when combat squading a bike unit.

so wouldn't three biker plus the attack bike count as five wounds? I will post this query in YMDC.

No, it specifically says five bikes. not five wounds so you need to take 5 bikes before attaching the attack bike.
My question is why not take the large squad and then break it down? You take 5 bikers w/2 special weapons and a power fist while the other unit is 3 bikes and an attack bike for support. I personally love the fact that I can take them and combat squad the full sized units. plus it's fluffy since it's like a bike mounted tac squad with an extra special weapon
I've found full bike squads are a gem since you can break them down. problem is taking 5+attack bike makes for some big squads and makes them harder to manuever. I even break them down in kill point games since the flexibility is better for me than limiting kill points.
Just my 2 cents

I think four bikers including the sergeant and an attack bike constitutes a troop choice. Refer to the thread related to this discussion in YMTC.
The reason for fielding smaller squads is a higher concentration of special weapons including the power fist and attack bikes.
