What are some normal and extreme tactics and strategies you use with wraithguard as troops or elites in your army list?

I like running 5 with a warlock in a wave serpent to go monolith hunting.

Nothing kills monoliths like Wraithguard.

A minsized unit of three makes an interesting bodyguard for a farseer in a standoff army. They make him fearless and majority toughness 6, and he makes them lucid.

You know, I've never even considered that arrangement. If they can get near a vehicle, they would be deadly to tanks too. Nice suggestions- thanks!

Basically, they're not worth the points unless you're fighting superheavies (Apoc), armored company, or plague marines. If you take them, you are operating at a handicap. If you get good with them though, you are a really good player. Given that you seem to really, really want to use them (your multiple posts on the subject), I would give the following advice:

First, be ready to fail a lot in your early games, but if you persist until you are good with them, you will get a lot of respect from opponents that know the unit.

Full-strength units: I really wouldn't go above one unit of 10, and that only in an advancing foot list, never a sit-and-shoot list (their range sucks). One unit of 10 can hold a mid-table objective well. However, they need a CC countercharge unit to avoid being beaten down by powerfists within a couple rounds. The ICs that Squig Herder mentions are good fighters, but if joined with the squad they will lose some of their effectiveness: Maugan Ra his mid-range fire and Jain Zar her speed on foot and Fleet. A better accompaniment might be Asurmen (who lives against powerfists longer than the others, covering the WG's weak spot well) or Yriel (same bonuses as Asurmen, plus he's cheaper, hits harder and gives you better reinforcement rolls).

Smaller units: More useful are small units of 5 in Serpents. While Dragons may be better shooters for the points (and pack more shots), the WG will be more durable for grabbing objectives. 5 will still die fast though, especially to powerfists, so again they need to be near a CC bail-out squad. Shining Spears keep up well with mounted units, but just about anything will do. I like Banshees.

So that's my advice.

18" range would have made Wraithguard worth the points, but as is your other troops handle the same roles better and with more flexibility. Fire Dragons handle mobile anti-tank/MC/terminator better (and way cheaper), Dire Avengers with PW/SS and Defend make a better close-combat anvil vs. strong troops (and can shoot worth a damn), and Guardians next to the Avatar can suck up shooting hits AND serve as a CC anvil better.

Oh, one last point: WG do rock in Apocalypse, which is where my 22 WG see the light of day, shooting superheavies right and left. The datasheet that makes them give Fearless bubbles like the Avatar (for a measly 25 points) is hands-down the best buy in the game. They also kick ass against things immune to melta fire, against gargantuan creatures, and against other wraith-constructs.

if you're going to run a unit of 3 as a bodyguard as Flavius Infernus mentioned you might also want to take a single warlock with emolden, thanks to the new rules this lets you reroll failed psychic test ... 30pts but i now rarely fail the test

at the moment i have them in a waveserpent and use them to nuke any thing that i need to clear

when i get another 5 i will feild them as a troop choice as it'll free up an elite slot and have one of the hardest troop choices cast fortune on them and walk them across the board ... you want to shoot at them? great my weaker units thank you for ignoring them

I've run nearly ever list i've ever played with SOME wraithguard. Sad to say they typicaly do not "earn their points back" in most games. They do however perform greatly at distracting my opponent from other threats while they try to take them out. They are sort of Eldars terminators in this manner. While lacking the 2+/5++, they more than make up for it with thier 6 toughness, 3+/5++ cover save if you give your lock conceal. Not to mention a gun that makes any heavy infantry or vehicle think twice about getting close.

As others have said, big threats are large disposable mobs locking you up in CC. Powerfits (or their equivalent). Rending, and hardcore cc troops. Besides that I can't say much more. While i've had alot of experience with them, i've never had the fast hard hitting CC troops necessary to make a hammer and anvil type list so I've never really used them in this manner.

I have 5 wraithguard and I find them pretty useless for 35 points each. Fire dragons do the job for half the pay. I'd be curious to hear other people's experience with these units. I want to find an excuse to bring them. Especially since they're 15 bucks a pop.
