I've got a huge urge to create a fun army and paint it Red Period style. I know you all remember, goblin green base with green basing material, ultramarine blue with LOTS of red. An excess of unneeded red. Red that is so blatantly places, it just doesn't make ANY sense! Need examples, well I've got examples.

BY THE WAY....who can tell me how to achieve that iconic red color?

From your list, I'd say Tyranids, (did you know you put dwarfs twice?)

I've got some 2ed orks still on the sprues. When I've finshed my marines, I'm going to give them a proper old school bright red look. For old times sake.
I do think that the darker look of models nowadays is better fitting with the 40k ethos, but I can't help smile when I pull out an old WD and see all those lovely primary colours.

Oh and to get the right red you might need to experiment. I'd try white undercoat (VERY important imo), blood red base coat, and mix in a little yellow/orange for highlights

Go with some old space marines. They look naff in red lol.

I love the razorback you have in the pic. Nice and clean, new out of the factory...blue ram....not for long.

Orkses is never defeated in battle. If we win we win, if we die we die fighting so it don't count. If we runs for it we don't die neither, cos we can come back for annuver go, see!

Hah, didn't even notice i put dwarfs twice.

my current pull is towards Nids or Marines as they would be the easiest.

Yes, for Sigmar! Perhaps a red/yellow scheme? Kind of like Fantasy Howling Griffons Space Marines?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

If you can actually pull off that clean of a paint job, that style on marines is incredible. Brings a tear or nostalgia to the eyes of some, and confuses those darn kids.

Argh Crap. I accidently voted for the wrong option. I meant to hit Tyranids but clicked Marines. OH WELL

Anyway if you can pull a nice crisp paint job off, definitely marines.

Leaning more and more towards the Marines. If I could pull off what a couple of you have said and pull off some really clean colors it would be fun to have such a nostalgic looking army.

It would however be ridiculous to do Warriors of Chaos, using the new models, but painting them old style. A travesty or would it bring a (kindly) smile to your face?

YO DAKKA DAKKA!

That's smile-affirmative. Not silly at all. Lack or battle damage is disconcerting. Painting the colours themselves isn't hard though; the trick is you have to basically make it look as though a brush hasn't touched it.
'Battle wear' lends itself well to a little hairy brushwork, but you'll be wanting an airbrush for large flat areas, or a very finely bristled brush, to avoid streaking.

White primer goes without saying.

Y'know... I feel like an idiot now. I knew there was something "off" with the title... I guess whatever army you make, you should have a female commander and name her "Aunt Flo"
