I'm working on a Dredd Kan list. i've got a six kans and one dredd thus far. It seems that most people that run Big Meks with KFF use vehicles but I'm interested in creating a competitive army that walks. I was thinking of putting the mek in the front-right of a 30 man boyz mob and putting the kans in front. The kans should get the 4+ cover save from the KFF and the boyz should get the 4+ cover save from being behind the kans. Like this:

.....kan....kan....kan....kan....kan....kan
.........xxxxxxxxxxxMEK............... (depending on the grouping the mek might be able to give cover saves to two units of kans)
........xxxxxxxxxxxxxxx................

The list will consists of 1, possibly 2 big meks with kff, 3x30 boyz mobz, 9 kans, and 1 or 2 deff dredds.
Any tips or suggestions on using foot-slogging Big Meks?

I love my deffs nad kanz but be aware that they can some times just get in the way of your boyz. As they get imobilised and stunned they can at times make problems for the boyz who are running behind them. Also watch out for exploding kanz. You would be amazed at howm many boyz you can loose from those tin kanz going up. Remember the explosion is inside the shield ussualy so you will just get your 6+.

That's not how the KFF works. You would get a cover save from the explosion.

You should be able to get away with only using one KFF. Just run him in a squad of 30 boys, and when that squad eventually gets low on models, you can jump him into the other squad that's standing right next to him.

Also, with the new vehicle squadron rules in 5E, the comment about stunned and immobilized results slowing up your boyz is completely incorrect. An immobilized result is treated as destroyed, and stunned is counted as shaken. This is another reason why you probably won't need 2 meks - as their ability to repair stuff won't be used that much.

Things to consider would be adding a unit that's going to hold objectives in your own backfield, as the majority of your army is going to be advancing with the kanz and the cover they produce. Adding a units of gretchin with an attached SAG could work, as it's something an opponent probably wouldn't get too excited about shooting at.

The Mek ony has to be within 6 inches of the one model in any of the units so don't bunch them tighter than they need to be.

Beyond the 6+ error, much of what you say is no longer true of walker squadrons:

1) Walkers in a squadron ignore damage results that make them unable to move for a turn (possibly shaken as well, don't have rulebook in front of me_

2) Vehicle immobilization is treated as vehicle destroyed.

Until one last Kan is left, they really can't get in the way nearly as easily as they used to be able to.

Hmm my bad I guess I have been using the deff dreads so much that I did not read up on the squad rules for kanz. As to the KFF did they change it so that wounds caused by things within the shield bubble can be saved now? For instance when a marine shoots at your mob and he is in the shield do the boyz still get the cover save? If so cool you learn somthin every day.

Crawdadr:

There's no Kustom Force Field 'bubble'. Units get a cover save if they have a member within 6".

I'd take two Mekz with KFFs at the 1750 pt level.
