I know in 4th ed. you could not shoot through CC fights. We couldn't find any specific rule about this in 5th. Is this still the case? How does this affect the LoS rules and being in an elevated position if at all?

This is an intersting queston, it has very specific rules about shooting through friendly and enemy units. I would say, it's possible to shoot through it, granting the enemy their normal save. Unless of course you have some special ammo that ignores cover *cough* sternguard *cough* making them just that much more magical.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

True LoS means just that in 5e.

If you can see it, you can shoot it.

if you see parts of it....cover save.

if there's a disagreement about cover saves...-1 to cover save.

He's right except for that part, which is a very common misconception.

The '-1 cover save' rule is only utilized when both players agree that they're not sure if at least half of the target unit is in cover. If one player disagrees then players have to take the time to check LOS from each firing model in the unit to determine if at least half of the target unit is in cover or not.
