Step by Step magnetic fex arms

(Magnets from Rare Earth)---> http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/

Break off your fex's arms because you didn't have the foresight to do this in the first place.

Carve or drill out (very carefully)any areas you intend to put a magnet.

Glue in a tiny magnet. IMPORTANT!--- the tiny magnets will fall into the body of the 'fex if you're not carefull, so keep a metal object of some sort holding it in place. (In this case- a small screw driver.)

Wait awhile for the glue to dry- then remove the screw driver/metal thing, and seal the deal for sure with another drop of glue.

Repeat for other parts- making sure you get the poles correct on the parts that go together.

Barbed strangler sack tube- Contains a naile head that was cut off with wire cutters, then glued into a carved out hole.

Final Products-

Thanks for reading- hope you 'fex lovers give it a try...

Im definitly magnatizing my weapons options for tanks and such. A very nice tutorial. A link to the site you got the magnets would be nice though.

Given the prices of some of these models, this is one of the best options available to cut costs IMO. I'm re-doing a FW Word Bearer dread I have that was purchased off Ebay. All the weapons were glued in place so now I've been adding magnets. Nice work btw.

One thing I think could improve this trick, but which I haven't yet tried, is to put some plastic pins in as well.

With just a magnet, the arm can rotate and generally wobble around. If you put a pair of plastic pins in, glued only on one side, but drilled on both, those would prevent the arm from moving, and then the magnets would prevent it from pulling loose.

A lot more work, but I think more rugged in the end, and also fairly doable considering the size of the joints in a Fex model.

that a good idea with the plastic pins. would definitely stop parts movement

If you happen to have trouble with the magnets not being strong enough, I fully agree with Phryxis' post.

Quick question, what did you use to drill out the holes? A drill being the obvious answer, i was just thinking specifically and best for the job.

EDIT: Also, which size of the magnets did your purchase? wouldn't want to get the wrong size now.

To "drill" out the holes, I used a hobby knife for the general hole area- then a small and sharp philips head screw driver (pictured abouve) to round off the edges. I use the hobby knife for alot of carving and cutting, so I'm faily good with it. Be carefull not to overcut if you plan to use a knife. It's safer to use a drill bit, and simply twist by hand after you've made a primary entry point. (sounds like doctor talk)

I purchsed "Disc - D0.125 x T0.063 - Package of 100" the smallest size in the disc section. The link is here. http://www.rare-earth-magnets.com/detail-ID-121.html

Thanks for asking...

i used the same magnets for my terminator arms...
they should be plenty strong for fex arms, but the pinning idea is pretty nice...
if i ever get another carni so i can do that apocalypse data sheet, i will probably try this with the pinning...
thanks
