Okay well I got a commission for some eldar stuff and the guy wants to have the glass on his wave serpents tinted the only thing I can think of would be to soak them in some ink (not the new washes but the old inks) any thoughts or ideas?

A simple approach would be to add a touch of ink to some 'Ardcoat (or pinch your girlfriend's nail polish). The advantage to this is that you can build up tonal differences by adding more or less ink.
Downside is the wear and tear on your brushes (so use an old one), and removal of 'privileges'. :S

Clear varnish tinted with ink?

Be careful with nail polish. It may dissolve the plastic.

I hadn't heard of window tint spray before -- that's a good tip!

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Adrift within the vortex of my imagination.

1. Clean the window carefully.

2. Use normal GW ink use it diluted 'to taste' with as large a brush as you can use. Tank brush is ideal.

3. Tint the inside not the outside.

4. paint quickly and generously, keep the coat even and with no visible brushstrokes.

5. Keep the window moving if is is not flat. DO NOT LET THE INK POOL. This is probably the hardest part. You might need to hold the canopy for a few minutes.

You might need to practice to get the effect you want. Cut open a cola bottle and tint the insides, the visual effect will be broadly similar though remember the plastic is different quality and thickness.

Gloss enamel with a tiny drop of any gloss colour you want. Alternatively there are paints specifically for glass for people to do stained glass work at home, I've seen it in craft shops.

those are all good ideas, id say dip the windows tho, because what your going for youll prolly see brush strokes and that would suck. just make sure its diluted enough so it takes a couple dips.(seeing as dipping would get both sides darkened and not diluted enough would be to dark)

Future floor polish mixed with ink works great. Model builders have been doing this for years. An added benefit is that Future will heal some scratches and clarify the plastic. Word to the wise, after dipping the part let sit in a dust free environment for several days to let cure.

Tamiya makes clear paints... depending on what color you want to tint, Smoke or Clear Orange would work well... they can be brushed or Airbrushed, but for something like tinting a clear piece an airbrush would give you a much better end result.

I've used those paints with my kids. Find some spare plastic and experiment a little first. It can dry somewhat unevenly. Are you going to paint the inside of the canopy or the outside?

Stained glass kit paints are very thick and gooey. They're meant to pool and fill an area between raised borders. They would not work at all.

*hugs the Major*

I've some projects coming up for which I'll need to paint clear colours over metallics and gold-tint some canopies and was wondering how I was going to get even coverage without resorting to expensive spraycans. (Previous handbrushed canopies have been...streaky.) I'd heard of Future before but given that it's not available locally never thought more of it. Your post prompted me to have another look and thanks to this webpage I found some of the discontinued local repackaging. Wish me luck!

No, seriously, wish me luck. You haven't seen me paint!

If you are going to do a lot of glazed windows buy the stuff recommended here. For a few Eldar tank canopies it might not be worth it, there are plnety of make do solutions you can use from your normal paintset.
