Subject: DA 2K competitive? Or buy a SM codex?
|
 |

ok so I'm not a veteran player at all, atm I have one codex and I've been trying to put together a fun and competitive list. Why oh why didn't I sign up to these forums before I bought the DA codex??
I guess the big question is can I field a similar army using the SM codex for a lesser point cost? If I can please let me know.
This list is my attempt at a mobile shooty army. Allthough I could replace some shooty eliments (ie HQ-Command Sq-Preds) with a LRC chaplain and c&c termies or Assault sq. I've also considered swapping out the two preds for a pair of WW's or Vindicators. Another option would be to replace the preds with another tac/Rb.
I really wanted some scout snipes but at the price in the DA codex? NO WAY ! !! !
Honest and brutal c&c are welcome.
HQ
Company master w/Combi-plasma
Command Squad 2Plasmaguns +3bolters
Razorback
TROOPS
10Man tac w/Sarge PF +Plasma pistol +Plasmagun +Multi-melta
Razorback
10Man tac w/Sarge PF +Plasma pistol +Plasmagun +Multi-melta
Razorback
10Man tac w/Lascannon
Razorback
10Man tac w/Lascannon
Razorback
HEAVY SUPPORT
Predator
Predator
Landraider
Landraider
So thats 35 points left over. I could upgrade the remaining two lascannon tacs to have flamers//plasma//meltas or I could give the LR's extra armour. Or I could give the pred a TL-LC or some HB side sponsons.
Is extra armour really worth it ? I've yet to use it so let me know if its worthwhile.
The idea is to combat squad the first two tacticals to have the sarge and MM in one and the plasma gun in the other. The 4 squads of 5 then go in each RB with the command squad in their RB. The remaining two tacs go into the LR's and provide fire support/objective holding.
When the combat squaded marines unload. The sarge squad targets armour and the two plasma squads and the CS try to get into positions to rapid fire troops/light armour. The RB's provide some well needed cover/fire support.
Like I said, I'm a very new player so if there any obvious flaws in this list or my tactics don't be afraid to point them out ....but please dont laugh!

If you have the models then I suggest going with the Space Marine Codex. There's nothing in that army that the Dark Angels can do better than Ultramarines. That said, don't write off the Dark Angel Codex too soon. Take a look at what you can take regarding Fearless units.

You have 1 too many heavy support options. I am an avid dark angels fan but I think the only really viable army with them know is Deathwing. I have been really succesful with them but as far as pretty much everything else in the codex goes I would just run normal marines.

ok thanks guys I'll consider going deathwing instead.
Just seems like you dont get quite as much bang for you buck with 20 or so scoring units in a 2k army..

DA are there for the cool DA stuff--DW assault and ravenwing, and the special characters. As you don't really look like you're using those, I'd go with the new SM dex.

Remember Deathwing are not that easy to play. It is vey difficult to master the concepts let alone win with them. You have to play tight and not make very many tacitcal errors or you will find your self with half your army gone.
I would go with space marine if you say you are not a veteran player. Not because I don't think you could be good with Deathwing but you will have more fun makeing a list with the new space marines that will also be competative. Just a thought.

You don't have to go with pure Deathwing or pure Ravenwing, or even a mix. A regular Dark Angels Company can do very well, particularly if you bring an Interrogator Chaplain, and a Sacred Standard in a Command Squad. Both of these units are Fearless, and can confer Fearless to other units, Chaplains by accompanying them, and Command Squads via being within 12" of the Sacred Standard.
Add a Company Captain for his Rites of Battle if you can to move out of the Fearless bubble or if you want to maximize the use of your combat squads, or Ezekiel for close-in psychic crunching, nigh unlimited psychic defense, and you have a very dependable force with plenty of shooting power.
Remember, with Dark Angels you can take a short squad of five Tactical Marines without losing the option of a Plasma Gun/Melta Gun/Flamethower. This can be very handy for filling up those spare points.
And, while I shouldn't be recommending this, the Smoke Launchers on Dark Angel vehicles follow the 4th edition rules, meaning that a Dark Angel Vehicle in cover can pop smoke so that any hits that do get through count as glancing!

Hrmm thanks for the ideas..I think I might give this list a few more goes. The reason I brought the company master in the first place was rites of battle (thats about all he has going for him) + I've yet to play a game with the fearless special rule so I'm unsure how much it would benefit me.
P.S thanks for reminding me about 5man tacs being able to take PG/ MG/FL and the smoke/incover rule sounds just fricken awesome!!!

I'm still going to buy a SM codex when I get the money just for fun =)...and was thinking of getting a necron one after seeing a deceiver in action.
I guess it wont harm my gaming brain to get lots of codex's.
