It's the crevices in their flesh. I can't-get-the-basecoat-to-stay. I always end up going into the cracks with the second layer of paint, so I can't get the shading effect.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.
Less paint on the brush could help. Load the brush then wipe off the excess on a smooth surface whilst creating a nicely shaped brush..
Find a proper workspace with a comfortable painting position.
Try resting your wrists on the table and exhaling as you paint to avoid the dreaded shakes!
Take your time.
