Hello everyone,

One of the guys from our local gaming club is having some trouble creating a truly competitive 1500 points army list using the new space marines codex, so I figured I'd give him a hand. As I obviously do not have much experience playing space marines, especially their 5th edition codex, I thought I'd ask you guys what you think about the list. Everyone at our local gaming club plays very competitive lists (2x lash prince, 6x oblits chaos / 45 lootas, 90 shoota boys orks / 2x hive tyrant with bodyguard, 6x carnifex, genestealers) so please do not hold back on any comments. The list hasn't been built yet and so everything can still be changed. Here is the list:

HQ:

Pedro Kantor - 175

Troops:

Tactical Squad - 90
1x Space marine sergeant
4x Space marine

Dedicated Transport Razorback - 40

Tactical Squad - 90
1x Space marine sergeant
4x Space marine

Dedicated Transport Razorback - 40

Elites:

Sternguard Veteran Squad - 240
1x Space marine sergeant (Combi-melta)
7x Veteran (5x Combi-melta, 2x Combi-flamer)

Dedicated Transport Rhino - 35

Sternguard Veteran Squad - 210
1x Space marine sergeant (Combi-melta)
6x Veteran (4x Combi-melta, 2x Combi-flamer)

Dedicated Transport Rhino (Dozer blades) - 40

Fast Attack:

Land Speeder Squadron - 270
3x Land speeder (Heavy flamer + Typhoon missile launcher)

Land Speeder Squadron - 270
3x Land speeder (Heavy flamer + Typhoon missile launcher)

Total Points: 1500

Thoughts:
As you probably noticed the list is based upon overloading the oppositions capability to handle av 10 or 11 while taking as many units that can take on a diversity of targets.
The tactical squads have been taking in minimal size squads to free up more points for sternguard (which are scoring as well due to Pedro's presence). Pedro Kantor will join the smaller of the two sternguard squads. The dozer blades on their rhino were purely taken because there were 5 points left. Do you guys think the combi-flamers add to the sternguard unit (especially against the orks), or do you think the cover save ignoring boltgun ammunition is enough? Also would you take the land speeders in three squadrons of 2 each, or in two squadrons of 3 each?

Thank you guys in advance,
Airmaniac

Fifty views and nobody has anything to say about the list? Some dakka members give excellent advice and I'd very much appreciate any input regarding the new Space Marines.

Thanks,

If you're trying to overload (and I'm not sure how well tha would work) with low AV, go for 3 squads of two speeders. More targets that way.

Have you considered drop pods? They seem a highly effective way of delivering the Sternguard, even though it does sort of break the AV 11 thing. In fact, I think a Drop pod army would probably be much more effective than 4 transports, especially with Sternguard. I would completely scrap the combi-flamers in this case, take more combi-meltas, and combat squad when you hit first turn. Vehicles and anything else in rapid fire range dies.
