I'm new to WHFB, and I'm trying out Chaos Mortals. What's their general playstyle, and what are some good options for a new army?
Thanks in advance.

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Line up and run flat out at the enemy.

The only shooting is throwing axes and hellcannon and the odd flamer.

Chaos has always been the close combat monster in the WHFB game.

Options:
Knights are brutal.
Giants are better than they used to be with MON or MOS
Chaos warshrines offer some fun and stiffening of the line.
Marauders can be used to hordify the army.

Start the Panzer....

Er anyway. Very nasty in CC. Expensive but devastating CC characters. Well armoured cept for your lighter Marauder units.

They can do anything but play a pure gunline (but then again, with double hellcannon + sorcerer council you can get close!)

+1 Waaaagh.

That beat peoples heads in with knights.... IMO they are a one trick pony.

They're far from a one-trick pony, unless you wanted to say that only being able to take the enemy in close combat was one trick [in which case a couple armies would fall into that].

How you go about doing it, though, is up to you. Chaos characters can be made fairly cheap and support units very well. The units themselves give you variety in how you want to approach the enemy, but in general you will have a solid core of slow-moving troops, some flank protectors like spawn or marauder horsemen to keep yourself from being march-blocked, and some fast units like knights or dragon ogres to put pressure on the enemy early.

I would say they are a very good beginner army. Pretty cheap buy in, and a solid fun beat stick army to play.

2012- stopped caring
Nova Open 2011- Orks 8th Seed---(I see a trend)
Adepticon 2011- Mike H. Orks 8th Seed (This was the WTF list of the Final 16)
Adepticon 2011- Combat Patrol Best General

I don't have the book yet, so can someone tell me out of the options in the WoC and Knights boxes which are illegal? Thanks.

None.

The WoC comes with 12 models armed with HW/S and a command option. The knights come with 5 knights and steeds with options to do HWs or Lances and command.

Most people prefer not to put lances on the knights as 1) You lose the magic weapon 2) HWs are better in a sustained engagement and 3) You pay more points for lances
