Thoughts on my list. The list was built to maximize hammer and anvil units. Great Unclean Ones are some of the greatest anvils in history, and the plague bearers aren't horrible at it. The grinders could double as anvils and hammers, and the fiends and bloodletters were hammer units.

A note about objective placement. I tend to always keep the objectives as close together as possible. This usually allows me to claim 2-3 objectives with one unit of plague bearers. My opponent put one way out on the NorthWest side. And one on the NorthEast side. I was able to clump 3 of them close together near the table center.
Deployment:
I win the roll to go first and graciously defer it to my opponent. He sets up with the fire warriors as his center, broadsides and hammerhead and commander behind the fire warriors, 1 squad of suits and a devilfish squad on each flank. Kroot infiltrate onto the northwest side of the table into a large piece of terrain and seize one of the objectives.
I choose as my first wave 2 fiends, 2 great unclean ones, horrors, and plaguebearers and roll a 2. Which means I end up with 3 grinders, letters, and plague bearers.
Tau Turn #1
Nothing much on the table so he does a bit of jostling, moves forward a bit.
Daemons Turn #1
I deepstrike a grinder next to the kroot in the Northwest next to an objective that hasn't been claimed yet. One in the center near the middle of the tau battleline (and some tasty firewarriors). And one around the middle of the East side of the table. Plague bearers drop behind the grinders and move into the cluster of objectives. Blood letters drop behind the center grinder. I flame out about 6-7 kroot, and 6 out of 12 fire warriors. With two of the grinders. My str10 shot from the other grinder misses.
Tau Turn #2
The tau army recoils from the grinder landings and moves back. This means that the pb's and bloodletters don't have any shots leveled at them. However the center grinder is destroyed and the one near the kroot on the objective is immobilized.
Daemons Turn #2
I get both great unclean ones and the horrors. I drop the horrors in the center to support the bloodletters. Both unclean ones I drop as close to his lines as possible attempting to pin him in. One near the horrors and the other one further north and west near his hammerhead and fusion crisis suits. The horrors kill a full 12 man fire warrior squad. Bloodletters run up and shelter behind the great unclean one I just dropped in.
Tau Turn #3
The tau focus fire and eliminate all of the horrors, and put a wound on each of the great unclean ones. All the rail shots at my last grinder miss or are saved by cover (yes I was able to find cover for a grinder!!). Some shots and a flamer into the bloodletters sees 5 of them go down.
Daemons Turn #3
Great Unclean One charges the fire warriors on the northwest side that were moving to support the kroot. Center Unclean One makes 6's for his movement and is able to assault the tau commander (he basically sacrificed him trying to wipe out the bloodletters). The bloodletters assault the 6 man fire warrior squad that was left from the original grinder flaming and wipe them out. The firewarriors actually manage to put a wound on the great unclean one in hth and pass their morale check. The commander loses combat and runs away. Great unclean one follows him to make sure he keeps running. Firewarriors put another wound on the great unclean one and keep him in hth.
Tau Turn #4
The last mobile grinder goes down to railguns. The bloodletters get reduced to 3 models. The great unclean one in the center takes another wound. The Firewarriors finally break and run away from the great unclean one, he starts to move towards the kroot finally!
Daemons Turn #4
Bloodletters combo charge the fusion crisis suits and a broadside team killing off drones and putting one wound on the broadside, 1 letter goes down suits fail their morale check and run. Great Unclean one in the center charges the other broadside and kills it. Both fiend packs and the plague bearers come in plague beares and fiends land towards the kroot (and firewarriors in devilfish). The other packe of fiends comes down near the missile pod suits and the other devilfish.
Tau Turn #5
Kroot fire ineffecively at the unclean one coming at them (it was down to one wound). The hammerhead and missile pod suits all shoot trying to take out the immobilized grinder but don't succeed.
Daemons Turn #5
Plaguebearers, fiends and a great unclean one charge the kroot secure the objective. Great Unclean one and bloodletters assault the hammerhead popping it. Fiends assault the devilfish and ground it.
And the game ended with me holding all 5 objectives and gaining all the bonus points. My opponent had never played daemons before. I explained what each unit did before the game, but I think the daemon army is something you really need to see in action to understand how the different parts of it work and just how tough some of it is.

Daemons Turn #1
My chosen wave was 2 Units of Plague Bearers, 2 units of fiends, and 2 great unclean ones. I got the wave I wanted. There was one piece of terrain in each of the quarters of his side of the board that were probably about 18 inches in from the his deployment edge and probably about the same distance in from the sides. I clumped a plague bearer unit a great unclean one and a unit of fiends around each terrain piece. The GUO's and plague bearers got into the terrain and the fiends deployed behind them.

2 grinders come in and the horrors. I keep the grinders and the horrors deep struck in the center between the two terrain pieces. Moving the horrors off towards the right(east) behind the terrain along with one of the grinders.
Eldar Turn #2
1 Fire Prism and 1 squad of guardians do not make it in. The fire prism goes in the far northwest corner (my left) and everything else goes into the far northeast corner (my right) except for the fire dragons that boost down the side of the board about 18 inche's. His shooting kills 3 of the fiends and 1 of the horrors. And puts a wound on my right side unclean one.
Daemons Turn #3
Fiends on the left side move towards the corner with his prism, roll a 1 for their fleet and are out of assault range. Plaguebearers on the left move up a bit but stay in the terrain. Plague Bearers on the right stay in the terrain. The right side unclean one shuffles forwards. On the right I have a grinder and whats left of the fiends make it into assault range of the wave serpent and do nothing. Bloodletters come in and hide behind the plague bearers in terrain in the center.
Eldar Turn #3
He offloads a guardian flamer squad and the dire avengers and the other guardian squad and the fire dragons. Fire dragons kill a grinder, flames and other shots wipe out the fiends, and he manages to get the great unclean one down to one wound. He also peels off half of the horrors.
Daemons Turn #4
My last grinder comes in and I deep strike him as close as possible to the fusion guardians killing 2. Plague bearers move up a whopping 2 inches and proceed to move another 2 inches thus failing their charge on the fusion guardians. Horror's return fire on the fire dragons killing all of them except the exarch. Fiends assault a prism and stun it. The great unclean one charges 2 of the wave serpents and manages to immobilize the banshee serpent. Great Unclean One assaults the other prism ripping off it's gun
Eldar Turn #4
He kills off the rest of the horrors, and then pours an amazing amount of shot's into the great unclean one who does not go down. He then assaults it with the banshees, the great unclean one miraculously survies. The fiends kill the stunned prism. His autarch squad and guardians get back in their wave serpents and move away from my plague bearers and grinders (his fusion squads couldn't get within 6 of the grinders because of the plague bearers).
Daemons Turn #5
Plague Bearers charge in to help out the great unclean one. He survies another round of hth and between the plague bearers and the great unclean one win the combat and the farseer and banshees run off the table (the great unclean one also destroys the immobilized serpent). I immobilize the other fire prism and one of the empty wave serpents.
Eldar Turn #5
All the eldar units get out and shoot again, finally downing the great unclean one with one wound left. But all the fusion guns failed to hurt the grinder.
Game ends on the roll of a 2. Tie on kill points 4 each.

The board: There were three wall sections forming a perimeter around the center of the table with about 12 inch’s in-between them. Most of the fighting took place around these three wall sections. The objectives were placed one on the far left near where the predator started. One on the far right (about 6 inch’s right of one of the wall sections) the other three were scattered about in-between, one on each of the 2 wall sections near deployment zones and the last one in the center.
Deployment
Blood Angel’s: rhino’s in the middle, death company and jump pack assault hidden behind the rhino’s. Predator on my left towards the back. Furioso on the right, right next to the rhino’s. One pair of attack bikes near the predator. Both other bike squads on the right hand side. He graciously allows me to go first.
My first wave was chosen as

and that is what I got.
Daemons Turn #1
I get the wave I wanted. The horror’s deep strike in on the right side objective close enough to shoot at one of the squads of attack bikes. Plague bearers come in the middle and move into the building on my deployment side. Both Great unclean ones come in, In the center of the table and move back a bit to prevent jump pack charges and get some cover. One fiend pack comes down on the left side and run’s into some terrain for cover. The other fiend pack comes in on the right side near the horrors but out of sight of the bikes. The horror’s shoot at the attack bike’s and between decent shots on my part, but more to bad dice roll’s on my opponents they take 3 wounds and lose a bike.
Blood Angels Turn #1
The rhino’s rumble forward in the center with all the jump troops behind them. The predator and attack bikes on the left peel off 2 fiends. On the right the full sized bike squad hides and the other one pot shots at the horrors killing one.
Daemons Turn #2
I get 2 grinder’s and the bloodletters in. The bloodletters and the grinders both come in off of my plague bearer icon in the middle. The letters hoof it behind the advancing pair of great unclean ones. The grinders shoot and manage to destroy the rhino that had corbulo in it. Both fiend packs advanced. The right fiends roll a one for their fleet making them unable to assault the death company so they run up and kill the lone bike. On the right hand side the fiends run into dante and his assault jump squad. I knew this was a suicide mission when I started it but I needed to pair the unit down. My opponent impressed me again by failing 7 out of 9 armor saves effectively taking the unit down to Dante, 1 power fist, and 2 normal guy. They manage to take down 2 of the fiends.
Blood Angels Turn #2
The dc charged into the fiends. The dc went down from 10 to about 5 and after all of the combat resolution there was one left who hit and ran out of the combat. Corbulo and his squad and the other rhino fall back. The furioso tries to take a long range melta shot at a grinder but doesn’t cause any damage. Dante finish’s off the other fiend pack in hth and he’s down to Dante, fist and one other. Dante falls back away from the pair of great unclean ones.
Daemons Turn #3
My third grinder comes in off of my icon in the center. The great unclean ones advance some more and make it to the destroyed rhino’s. The grinders advance down the center and manage to immobilize the furioso. My lone fiend goes all the way across the table and assaults the two man bike squad to keep them locked in hth (no wounds were caused).
Blood Angels Turn #3.
Corbulo detaches from the squad he was with and hops into the rhino with the other squad which then advances on the right hand side a bit. Dante jumps to the objective on the left to get away from the great unclean ones. The death company, because of rage, are forced into assaulting one of the great unclean ones, the guo takes a wound and kills 2 of the dc in return. The predator puts a wound on my other guo and the attack bikes on the right kill a grinder. No wounds are caused in the fiend fight yet again so he hits and runs out towards the predator.
Daemons Turn #4
The Bloodletters charge in and finish off the dc freeing up a guo. The other guo charges the attack bikes the fiend just left and kills one and locks the other. The other fiend tries to get the predator but is unable to destroy it.
Blood Angels Turn #4
Dante is still hiding on the left. The left guo kills the last attack bike and gets a 6 for his massacre actually making dante an assaultable target the next turn. The two attack bikes on the right destroy a grinder. The rhino with corublo and the troop squad advances on the right.
Daemons Turn #5
Plague Bearers deepstrike onto the objective on the left hand side. The great unclean one assaults dante and friends, killing off the friends. The bloodletters assault and kill the other 2 attack bikes and fall back onto an objective.
Special note here, at this point I have troop units on all 5 objectives.
Blood Angels Turn #5
Dante dies to the great unclean on. His predator jets forward 12” to contest the objective my plague bearers landed on the turn before. He dismounts corbulo and the assault squad from the rhino. Corbulo charges into the horrors on the right hand objective. The assault squad assaults my bloodletters (after they get flamed by the furioso) and after the dust settles there are 3 bloodletters and 2 marines left. And his rhino turbo boosts over 2 dead grinders to context another objective. At this point if the game ends he will have turned a massacre into a minor victory since I’m now only holding one objective.
Daemons Turn #6
Thankfully he rolled a 4 and we played another turn. The left guo killed the predator, the bloodletters killed the rest of the assault squad and I destroyed the rhino, after which we called the game.

My Turn #1:
Both guo’s deep struck in near my opponents objective. The plague bearers deep struck near mine and a unit of fiends hid behind the pb’s. The bloodletters came down right in the middle between the two objectives. The other fiend pack dropped near the middle to support the great unclean one’s.
His Turn #1
He does a risky deep strike with the flamers and kills off 3 of my bloodletters. A small bloodletter pack comes in near my great unclean ones, and a bloodthirster comes down right next to them his naked dp comes down near the bloodthirster but scatters away from the action. His seekers come down in the center and he deep strikes another bloodletter pack right next to my plague bearers and backs them up with one of the winged dps.
My Turn #2
For my resereve’s I get horror’s 2 grinders. The horrors come down near the seekers. One grinder lands near the flamers and the other grinder comes in next to the plague bearers to help them with their bloodletter problem. On his objective one great unclean assaults the bloodletters and the fiends assault the bloodthirster and the bloodletters making it one big assault. The bloodthirster kills one fiend and the bloodletters are wiped out. The great unclean one consolidates into the bloodthirster. The other pack of fiends combo charges the nurgle prince and the seekers (my horrors were only able to snipe out 2 of them). The seekers and prince kill 2 fiends but the fiends wipe out the seekers and put a wound on the prince. The plague bearers charge the 3 bloodletters that were left after the grinder shot at them and wiped them out consolidating back towards the objective.
His Turn #2
He gets in his other dp, 2 units of bloodletters and both of his crushers. He drops the letters near his objective. The crushers near my bloodletter’s. And his other nurgle dp near my bloodletters. He charges his non-nurgle dp into the fiends to help out the bloodthirster, the bloodthirster and nurgle dp whiff all their attacks, I oblige by whiffing all of my attacks, and the great unclean one puts another wound on the thirster. My other pack of fiends finish off his nurgle dp and consolidate towards the other nurgle dp.
My Turn #3
Fiends assault his other nurgle dp and my grinder assaults the crushers. Bloodletters, plaguebearers and a guo assault the 2 packs of bloodletters on his objective. I role really badly and he kills 5 plague bearers and 4 bloodletters. He loses about 4 bloodletters. My last grinder comes in but scatters away from the action running to get back towards my opponents objective. The Bloodthirster and daemon manage to kill off the rest of the fiends, but the great unclean one polishes off the bloodthirster.
His Turn #3
2 more packs of bloodletters come down right on my objective (he was less than 3 inches away from the board with both units and rolled double hits). He kills off all ofl the bloodletters and I have one plague bearer let standing around. My grinder finishes off his blood crushers and the fiends finish off the dp. DP and unclean one trade hits.
My Turn #4
My horror’s start hoofing it towards his objective but fall way short. The fiends assault the remaining bloodletters killing them before they can gut my one lonely plaguebearer, he moves up onto the objective. His last dp goes down to my great unclean one. My Soul Grinders assault his bloodletters sitting on my objective.
His Turn #4
The grinders polish off the rest of the bloodletters. He tries to deep strike skulltaker onto his objective but skulltaker scatters off the table back into reserves.
My Turn #5
I surround the objectives as much as I can. I can’t quite make a huge bubble round his objective.
His Turn #5
He deep strikes skulltaker right next to the last objective, his placement was just a hair over an inch away from my models and just barely within the 3” mark of the objective. He rolls a hit and then rolls a 1 to continue the game, thus pulling out a minor loss for himself.
This game was a blast, and the unbelievable deep striking on the last 2 turns by my opponent was amazing.

Orks Turn #1
His army comes on in one huge mob. It’s bumper to bumper with everything being within 6 inches of the mekboy in the deffrolla battlewagon. He puts in on my center-left.
Daemons Turn #1
My chosen wave was 2 fiends, 3 grinders, 1 guo, and that was the wave I got. I made a horsehoe with the grinders evenly spacing them out to pen in his orks. Fiends went into some terrain on the left hand side of the table and in the center behind one of the grinders. I tried to place the great unclean one near the fiends on the left but he went 11 inches straight towards the orky lines. Soul Grinder shooting didn’t do anything.
Orks Turn #2
The skorcha’s break from the formation, one moving towards the fiends on the left (along with the looted wagon) the other moving towards the fiends in the center. 2 units of truck boys move up and prepare to assault my guo. Everything else shuffles forwards. My opponent unleashes a ton of rokkits and shots at my guo causing a wound and his gun battlewagon manages to immobilize the center grinder. His truck boyz assault the great unclean one causing no damage, I kill 3 orks and both mobs break and run I run down one and start chasing the other. Skorcha’s flame and kill 3 fiends out of the left pack.
Daemons Turn #2
Plaguebearers with icon drop next to my immobilized grinder and near my nurgle dp. And the bloodletters come in (I keep them back away from the skorcha’s). The left hand fiends assault the skorcha’s only managing to shake one of them. The immobilized grinder flames the skorcha’s killing one. The center fiends assault the remaining skorcha’s and kill them. The left hand side grinder advances and fleets. The right side grinder does nothing. The great unclean one assaults the looted wagon and destroys it keeping the other orks running.
Orks Turn #3
The left hand side skorcha’s go through terrain to get behind the fiends and lose 1 to difficult terrain and peel off two more fiends. The battle wagon with rolla rolls up and unleashes 12 flame thrower templates on my 6 fiends, needless to say they all die. The other trucks back up away from my great unclean one and unload into it (by this point I think I had taken 3 wounds).
Daemons Turn #4
My other unit of plague bearers and guo deep strike in off of my icon in the center. The right side grinder shot manages to blow up the first battlewagon and about a quarter of the burna boys, a failed dt test leaves the grinder that shot them unable to assault. The bloodletters move up to get protection from the immobilized grinder. The left side grinder moves up flames 3 trucks (immobilizing one) which it then assaults and kills the immobilized one. The great unclean one manages to blow up another truck. My one fiend that’s left goes zooming in after gun trucks and manages to take one out.
Orks Turn #4
The burna’s hop in the other battlewagon and it zooms forwards. He dumps more orks out of trucks and combi-assaults the great unclean one and a grinder, he finally brings down the unclean one and gets stuck in with the grinder and he manages to kill off the last fiend.
Daemons Turn #5
The right side grinder blows up the second battlewagon. 2 units of plague bearers assault one of his ork mobs. My other great unclean one blows up a truck. My horrors come down close enough to keep his unit of orks running and to shoot the unit that had just killed my great unclean one. He manages to snap down the second grinder in combat but loses to all the plague bearers.
At this point he has 4 kill points and I have 13 and he concedes since there is no way for him to get a win anymore.

So after 5 games I ended up with 87 battle points that put me firmly in 3rd place, a decent painting score and sportsmanship scores let me keep it  . The tournament was a lot of fun and was very well run by the GW staff. The judges were friendly and approachable, I had 4 really fun games and one okay game.

I'm loaning the army out to a friend to use in a tournament, so while getting it all together I tried to snap some pic's real quick. iPhone probably isn't the best to use, and I can tell I suck at taking pictures  . But here's a few at least.

Awesome job man. It's really nice to see the non-Khorne daemons getting into the action and kicking some tail. I always thought GUO's w/just grenades could hold down some mayhem, nice to see that the whole dex isn't dependent on 4 chariots.
Isn't it a kick in the teeth when the strong wing doesn't come in first? That 1 or 2 on that first dice always means that a game just got rougher.

All in all, fact is that Warhammer 40K has never been as balanced as it is now, and codex releases have never been as interesting as they are now (new units and vehicles and tons of new special rules/strategies each release -- not just the same old crap with a few changes in statlines and points costs).

Looks like daemon on daemon action can get pretty bloody. I can only imagine trying to anticipate my opponents actions when I don't even know what units he will have or where they will be from turn to turn.

Yeah if you've never played with or against a great unclean one their survivability is amazing. The dice roll always seems to add that extra bit of excitement to every game.

If you've never done it, it was an absolute blast, I need to find some more daemon players around here so we can do it again. I also think it would be fun to do a mono-god king of the hill type thing where you get 4 people each playing one god and round robin the games, so each person plays all 3 other people.

I have to say, the most fun games I have played have been daemon/daemon.
Also, the great unclean one has won against my bloodthirsters more than once. They are crazy hard and more killy than you would expect - they wound on a 2+ with a reroll against most everything and no armor save.
