Marneus + Legion of the Damned gives you AP2 shooting with Plasma Cannon + Plasma Gun + The Big M. Himself. And they can deepstrike, correct me if I am wrong. After that you can take 3 6-man Honour Guard squads in Drop Pods. All for ... 1375 points.

6 + 6 + 6 + 1 + 10 + Drop Pods = 32 models. Not bad. After that add tac and assault squads. You probably want bolters and flamers over more close combat.

For 300pts you could get 10 sternguard with 10 combi plasma if you really want plasma that badly.. 30pts for move and fire plasma cannon is not that great.. Sure 3+ invul, but so that just means your opponent shoots you down with bolters instead

You're probably better off not having the legion and getting a land raider for the honor guard

Maybe the best thing to do with the Legion is use them in small squads of 6.

The only thing genuinely better about Legion is their deep strike reroll deal that can make them attractive with a Librarian using Gate for mobile fire fighting.

The 3+ invuln makes them only slightly better while shooting because your Marines have most likely got a 4+ cover anyhow, and they're not really combat-optimized enough to make it worth while in the assault where it's really useful.

So honestly, taking a squad of Legion, Calgar, and 8 Honor Guard in a 1300 point list gives you a very small model count that's not terribly good at anything and dies to all the normal stuff that marines die to.

Try this instead:
Calgar +5x Assault Termis - 450
Crusader - 250
Sternguard + combi plas/melta and drop podx2 - 600

1300 pts, rock hard assault squad, AV14 fire platform assault transport, and 20 guys that kill anything they want dead on the turn they drop in.

26 models plus pods/crusader and you can still fill out with 40 tactical guys toting dual plasmas.

I like a small of LotD with meltagun, multi-melta and power fist plus a Librarian with Gate for tank hunting.

I was thinking two squads, meltagun and Multi-melta. Instead of a Power fist I would probably take another Terminator someplace.

I want to take a Gate Libby but I do not know where to stick him. The LotD squads can already deepstrike themselves. I have been thinking maybe an Assault Squad. 50 points for a possibly useless upgrade. 150, really, considering I can just take a second Assault Squad.

I could put him in with a bog standard Tac Squad. Good place for a Fist there, especially with Might of Heroes.

I like Deep Strike + Bolter.

I like Gate + Jump Pack because he can always switch squads in Turn 3/4 if he is still alive.

I think I will take four Tac squads, two with Rhinos and one with the Libby. The Libby one will be the Kill Team tac squad. Maybe I will model 15 guys, 10 Tac and 5 Vet and it will be a sort of Sternguard/ Tac squad.

I like Marneus because he can take multiple Honour Guard but maybe I will just take a Chapter Master on bike. I can always take Vanguard Assault squads, instead.

If you're not that dead set on Calgar, take a look at Lysander. S10 with 3+ invul and eternal warrior, combined with bolter drill, this guy is the codex MVP imo.

Lysander is a great special character. Just think if he conferred the bolter drill rule to all bolters. Marneus is more powerful since his rules apply to the entire army.

I think if I took Lysander I would put him in with 8 Tactical Termies, no upgrades and just shoot the Storm Bolters. Start them on the table, hidden behind something and just keep marching and shooting. You can Combat Squad but may as well take the bodies. He himself has 4 Wounds and the 3++.

Heck, Lysander with a Chapter Master and now the Chapter Master has an Apothecary on a Bike.

You could, or you could stick him in with a squad of sternguard. Rerolling ap3 gets hot! shots FTW. Correct me if i'm wrong, but you can reroll overheats now right? Or rerolling hellfire shots means near-automatic wounds, not to mention you can take wounds on him (even lascannons only knock a single wound off him, and he's got 4 and a 3+ invul!)

I don't know if he's worth the points cost though. Remember you can get 5 assault terminators for that much, and they all get 3++ saves too!

Legion of the Damned are another of those overrated squads. Cool but overcosted. If they came with close combat weapons as well, meaning they could fire their bolters then get 3 attacks on the charge...maybe. Or if they had ap3 bolters like thousand sons. The deep strike is cool, but why not just take a drop pod? 3+ invul save IS awesome though, but as people pointed out that means they're still just as vulnerable to rapid fire as regular marines are at twice the cost.

I wish meltas weren't so damned expensive for this squad. It would make them much more viable if combi-weapons were as cheap for them as they are for sternguard. If you could give them all combi-weapons for 5+ points each, you could get 5 combi-weaponed deep-strikers for 180 points, not too shabby. As they stand now though, as i said...meh

Legion of the Damned have 2 Attacks base. The Sergeant has 4 WS5 Power Weapon attacks on the charge. Not bad. Or you can take a fist.

True about Lysander's cost vs Assault Termies but he is still a solid HQ choice. He has Bolster Defences too, don't forget not to mention Ld10.

I like Lysander in with the Termies because of Chain Fists and general close combat utility. At 200 points you can take a whole squad of Sternguard if all you want him for is to buff them. You need to get that guy in combat if you are taking him.
