Subject: Any ideas on what to do with an eighties ork battlewagon?

Hi everyone! I haven't played warhammer in around fifteen years but I'm currently rebuilding a space ork army that I have always regretted giving away. I recently recovered a lot of late eighties/early nineties games workshop stuff from my parents loft and was overjoyed to discover the battlewagon pictured below (shown next to a trukk for scale);
Obviously it is awesome but I want to take advantage of some of the options that appear to be available in the new codex. At the very least I want to stick a killkannon and/or a big gun on there as my army is otherwise lacking in serious firepower, and I would really like to somehow attach a deff rolla. I have a few ideas but before I make a mess of things I thought I would ask if anyone had any experience of similar conversions. And had idiot proof instructions.
Also, while I'm posting, I notice that there is no mention of cyboars, runtbots or madboyz in the current codex and I have all of those. If I were to use them what rules should I use, or would I just get laughed at for turning up with them?
Thank you for your time!

I just went to the website of this forge world that you speak of and I found it really hard not to buy a herd of squiggoths. Their gunwagons do appear to have the same front end as my battlewagon and they sell the kannons for them seperately so that is certainly a good idea. Madboyz ain't weirdboyz though. Madboyz were just, well, boyz that were mad and you rolled on a table to see what they did at any given time. I'm guessing people just decided they were too disruptive and I'm going to have to field them as goofy looking boyz.

I was already thinking about fielding the cyboars as counts-as warbikes, but you have given me another tempting idea. If I field the battlewagon as a trukk for my nobz squad it could save the hassle of converting it and would free up a heavy support slot.
So a few things to think about. Thanks guys!

Yep, use it as a trukk or looted wagon/guntrukk. Great model. Is that the old GW one or the Epicast/Armorcast version?
Boarboyz would make great bikerz (turbo-boosting = 'pushin' da big red button').
Old school stuff is awesome! Can't wait to see it painted up.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.
I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil |

It was the original GW plastic kit. I must have bought it when I was about twelve. I wish I could go back in time and buy a dozen.

Cyboars = Bikers, Stormboys
Runtbotz = 'Ard Boyz, Cyorks
Madboyz = boyz.

I too use mine as a boss/nob trukk - as your pic shows,, it's just the right size for that 'my trukk is bigger than yours' look essential for intimidating smaller orks.

Wow! hav'nt seen one of those in a while,nice.
I would use it as a boss trukk,add a few of the bits from the new trukk, add a large troop area to the rear. real nice.
As for cyboars and madboys, I suppose you could always use 'em in a feral orkz list,but I honestly don't know if that list is still "legal" for tornements & such.
You could always use the cyboars as " counts as" bikers, just strap on some big shootas and use the madboys as boyz.
Love the old battle waggon ,great find.

Unless you just WANT to use it/them I would say sell it on E-bay along with the other stuff there arnt rules for, that stuff always bring good coin. Then you can buy the new figs out for Orks, pretty much all of which are ace!.
I just sold that wagon on the sprue for $100. Plan on buying the new one and some other stuff with that coin. Like I said if you want to use them go for it, but if your trying to come up with something you may be better off sellign em.
I have 3 of the armor cast versions of that wagon and plan on going gun trukks with em. Littel plastic card here and a few odd bits should do just fine!

Fortunately I put my time since last playing WH40k to good use, going to university and getting a nice job and so forth. I don't need to sell anything to buy more orks, which is just as well as I don't seem to be able to pop into a GW shop to buy a few paints without buying everything that I think would look awesome in my Waaagh! What started out as a project to build a nicely painted 1,500 point army is heading in the direction of apocalypse and I haven't made much progress with the painting.
There probably is a bunch of stuff that I'm going to put up on eBay - epic armies, blood bowl teams and other stuff that I'm sure I'm never going to use again. But I'm keeping my old orks as I'm a great believer that ork armies should look as ramshackle as possible and I want to mix in as much of the old stuff as possible. But maybe no more Orcland Raiders nobz squad conversions, that drunken plan didn't go so well.
Picture should have been related, but the garish red plastic used by GW in the second edition blood bowl set defied my attempts at photography.
By the way, I ordered a gunwagon kannon from the forge world site and I'm hoping it should drop straight into my battlewagon. With some grot crew, a banner and a big skull on the front I should be good to go. Failing that the kannon will get put into one of the rogue trader imperial vehicles that I am orkifying and I will use the wagon as a fancy trukk for my nob squad.

Don't get rid of your blood bowl teams.
Paint two evenly balanced teams nicely then stack it on top of monopoly.
It really is simple enough for a pick up game over a few beers!!!!!

Sorry to go furthur OT but I don't think that red model is a bloodbowl orc!
I think it was from a game called keerrrrunch (sp, needs more or less Rs or Es).
It was a kind of entry level game that was out at the same time as Spacefleet that came with humans, orcs, dwarves and elves!

Seriously, it came with the second edition blood bowl boxed set. I got it for my 14th birthday and it was really exciting. There were sixteen identical blue plastic humans and sixteen identical red plastic orks. The bases had coloured rings round then to identify their positions. I recall the same figures were used as linemen in the third edition alongside a greater variety of plastic orcs and humans. I have the box it came in and everything. I have the Bolthrower 12" LPs and I know of no better proof of my GW geek credentials.

Fair enough!!!!
I bow down to your Bolthrower 12"
(I think they were also in Kerunch )
As for the battlewagon I'd keep it as original as possible and just use it as a trukk. It's always nice to scare kiddies at pick up games with the oldies (see my tyranid warriors ) !

Cat,
One thing to keep in mind is that the old space orks that you and I both have are of a smaller scale than the newer ork boyz. The top of their heads meet the AoBR boy'z eye level. Inventive basing can give them a few millimeters...
I'm going to field my 14 cyboars as bikes as well. Too bad I got rid of my buggies...

What harm can it do to find out? It's a question that left bruises down the centuries, even more than "It can't hurt if I only take one" and "It's all right if you only do it standing up." Terry Pratchett, Making Money
"Can a magician kill a man by magic?" Lord Wellington asked Strange. Strange frowned. He seemed to dislike the question. "I suppose a magician might," he admitted, "but a gentleman never could." Susanna Clarke Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell

The basing is a good idea that I will probably use. As you noticed I'm using several of the original plastic ork sprues. So far I have been sticking on arms/sluggas/choppas from the current ork range and the longer arms have been making them look less like they are tiny and more like they are just hunched over a little. I have been using the armless new-style ork bodies to make both lootas and burnas from my loota/burna plastic kits.
