This dec/jan Im going to start working on approx. 500 pts of a new army of converted necrons. My previous 500 point project (fallen angels) was purchased from me before I could finish them so I will be starting over; sorry to anyone who was following that thread.

I am sort of stealing a theme from a GW employee for an army he has thought of doing but never got around to- looted necrons. Essentially there will be a big mek, dressed to play the part of a necron lord, with a warsythe, and a rez orb (probibally a kffg). As for the troops, the necrons will either be orkily patched together with bits of rusty scrap, or simply be grotz pretending to be necrons, standing on eachothers shoulders, wearing the necrons as armor, w/ the necron guns- it all depends if i can find a source of models that fit the bill. What i mean by that is, I need to find grotz, or grot looking models, that are plastic and can be converted to do what I want.

Any help as to what models I could use, or simply opinions as to what would look better will be appreciated.

Well, though it wouldn't be exactly fluff worthy (Necrons are completely sentient, and thus cannot be "looted". And pieces of dead Necrons disappear along with the rest of the army after a Necron raid), I think it would be hilariously awesome to see three grots standing on top of each other, trying to wear the Necron's chestplates and shoulderpads, maybe having a grot standing up on one shoulder lugging around a gauss rifle.

That would be one damn hard conversion, though. I would absolutely love to see this thing go full-scale, with a looted Orky Monolith and all. Maybe have a unit of destroyers with the bodies chopped off and a grot or two fumbling around with the "wires" (even though Necrons don't have wires) trying to get the damn thing to fly, while one attempts to make use of the gauss cannon.

A very great idea. Though I would like to see some Boyz in Necron armor as well. At least they can lug around a gauss rifle all on their own.

I think a looted Monolith should be lopsided, or some ridiculously odd shape.

It does sound like a lot of fun, fluff be damned! Nothing saying the Orks didn't have a power surge that reached into the Warp with a KFF that kept the dead Necrons from leaving...

This is a totally fantastic idea... with the release of the plastic Grots, I think you'll have no problem with this. I can already envision some great gretchin-wearing-Necron models. Really interesting idea.

So necron wearing grotz it is. It may branch and become bigger, depends on how much fun the concept is to build

@Chrysaor; I am not too worried about the fluffiness of it, but now I am confused; if the necrons parts vanish when the raiders dissapear, how do csm have necron heads as trophies? (It may just be GW being non-consistent, not like that has never happened before) Regardless, I hope the funny factor of the army prevents comments similar to those aimed at those who field female space marines. I like the idea of the destroyers with the grotz messing about, I will have to use that. Ive thought of putting boyz in necron armor, and I may if I expand the army, but the first 20 or so necrons I want to be grot based.

@ Alex, thanks for the compliment, but I dont know if I can sculpt a grot from scratch, I may have to try it. I have a feeling youre right about the time consumption factor though.

Im not making an plans for monoliths yet, I have to build enough warriors for such a purchase to be worth it.

Thanks to all for the help, as soon as I get something going ill post pics

I honestly have no idea about that, but the 'cron codex specifically states that the reason The Empire knows almost nothing about Necron technology is because everything vanishes from the battlefield as if it never existed.

It sounds like a pretty bad case of inconsistency.

EDIT: Actually, if you're talking gameplay-wise, a Monolith is always worth it. Try fielding one in a 500 point game. It's nigh unstoppable, I promise.

Who knows why some Necron parts disappear and some don't. I know there is a Necron 'skull' on an Ork banner and a Chaos banner, so you could say the chaos influence and the Ork "it wurks 'cuz it should wurk..." thing keep them around.

Boyz in necron armor could be necron immortals.

Fluffwise, I agree with the theory that necron tech can't _literally_ be looted.

But I still think this army is a good idea - the orks aren't literally looting necron stuff, they are just imitating necrons (in the same way that Blood Axes imitate Imperial Guard). All it would take is for a big mek to accidentally discover gauss technology and its wonderful shootiness, and he'll be starting his own warband in no time. And if he doesn't really understand the tech and rather admires the real necrons, naturally he'll do his best to make everything look as necronish as possible. Even weird stuff like Phase Out just needs a little thought - the mek and his grots aren't as brave as they pretend to be, and run away en masse if they take too many casualties.

And if you also like grots, this suits them fine too - what grot wouldn't want to be strapped into a shooty bionic exoskeleton?

What I wouldn't like to see is just lots of necron bits glued to ork bits. But I'd love to see an army of imaginative ork/grot conversions who'count as' the various necron equivalents

@Chrysaor- I can imagine a monolith would be nigh unstoppable @ 500 pts, but I can imagine it would make me popular.

@Ghost- I like the boyz as immortals idea, if the army works out, they will become a reality.

@Clang- I dont think anyone wants to see necron bitz glued to orks, and that is not the point of these conversions. I like the concept for the fluff- immitators- though it is somewhat different than the original concept.

As a step foward- Ive acquired a mek and I will be attempting to turn him into a necron lord. Pictures will follow once I get a chance to hit him with some GS.
