Welcome to dakka.

If you are buying the basic set play orks and marines, your son would probably appreciate the marines more as they are quite forgiving at a non powergaming level which is what you would be after.

Just tell us how are you doing with marines and orks

Welcome to Dakka!

Just two things:
1. English is not my mother tongue. I´m really sorry for the misunderstandings and the kicks to the dictionary. Don´t be too hard on me, OK?
2. With the best intentions sometimes comes the worst advice. But you asked for it, didn't you?

Had my first beginners game on friday and all went well. I played as orks so the younger kids learning could be the marines and we got destroyed! All in all it was fun though. Still a lot I have to learn about, I pretty much learned the basics and what all the stats mean. I think I am going to build either a Black Templar army or Space Wolves, hard to decide. I am leaning more towards the BT though, just love the look and the brief summary I had gotten on them.

I'd suggest you to use Regular Space Marines. BT and SW are pretty old armies and not to mention Space Marines are really good and easy to play.

Keep playing and keep telling us how is it going for you!

Yeah, I had some other input on just playing SM using the new 5th ed. codex. I wouldn't mind playing ultramarines( I like the color scheme and the variety) but it seems in many of the forums people just get ripped apart for playing them (oh they suck, or they have a crap color scheme, or they are boring, no fluff) etc. I don't want to have to have arguments with people as to why I made my own choice (freedom of choice, it is a reality) especially considering I am new to the game and expect to have fun not talk gak with others over something that means nothing. Yeah I hear the new codex makes the marines a little better if not ridiculous but whatever. I will probably just pick up the new SM codex and go with that for a while. Thanks for the advice (others have been telling me the same thing, so I think I should listen)
