To be honest not really.

I would say the cheapest at the moment is marines using primarily those for the black reach set as you can buy a load of them really cheap from ebay.

GKs are pretty low model wise - think my friend had 27 in his list but he had dreads and stuff as well.

GKs are basically £18 (or whatever that is in $) for 5. Black read marines are about £5 for 10 (ish)

Grey Knights are NOT cheap. While you don't need many models, getting the specialized units like the psycannons and stuff skyrockets the prices rapidly.

The cheapest armies to start are marines and orks, thanks to the new black reach starter set. You can buy the ork or marine halves online at www.thewarstore.com, just search for black reach.

Cheaper codex than spaze marienz too!!!!!
Black reach certainly helps too!

Also keep in mind ease of play. GKs are tough to even build a list, much less win with.

Now GKs can be done cheap if (for example) you use DA or BT bitz and some knightly helms. I'm (re) doing my GKs that way using Dire Avenger heads and having a blast. but you need a deep, deep bitz box to pull it off.

But Marines and Orks are designed to be the entry level armies on price, ease of play and ease of painting.

yea i agree. orks hands down. you can scratchbuild pretty much everything that isnt a unit. and like what has been mentioned a few times already. AOBR is the CHEAPEST way to get going ive ever seen. and the nobz set coming out in January is only 25 bucks! and really orks are easy to write lists for too. i mean its either CC, SF or tons of lootas blowing gak up.

Also, many armys can be bought real cheap on EBay - for $100-150 you can get a pretty full army, usually already assembled (so you can play straight away at least) and sometimes painted (to some degree).

That would be the cheapest way to a full army, although I agree BR is a great entry into a 500 point army (or two!).

My boss was interested in 40K, but he wanted a DH list with "tons of footsloggers" (his phrase). I built a list that had GK HQ, elite, fast attack, and heavy support with 6 full platoons of IG as troops. Final cost: $1,081.00. And the IG only covered 330.00 of that. Most of the costs came from the GKs.
