I've been working really hard on some Cities of Death terrain, and I've been drawing a lot of inspiration from Necromunda sites. It seems like the modeling for Necromunda style games is much more open, since you only have to provide enough cover for a single model to hide, rather than dealing with trying to hide an entire squad. I also play orks, which means a squad of 20 guys in a lot of cases, which means a lot of ruined buildings. However, it would be a lot more fun to be able to take advantage of stuff like this:

Does anybody know of any 25-30 mm scale sci-fi skirmish games beside Necromunda, AT-43, or Warmachine? I'm thinking something with small number of models, maybe 10-15 tops?

Here's a skirmish game I whipped up a couple of years ago using Bloodbowl as the basis:

What I loved when I got to demo Infinity was that guns have ranges far enough to make
breaking cover ANYTIME scary.

Try rifling though the Sci-fi section of:

They're all free so you've got nothing to lose.

Try Urban War, really good and can be scaled up to 40k size when you use the Metropolis rules. Urban War uses a small amount of models that are controled individually. Also allows you to Overwatch! Their web site is http://urbanmammoth.com/

Live your life that the fear of death can never enter your heart. Trouble no one about his religion. Respect others in their views and demand that they respect yours. Love your life, perfect your life. Beautify all things in your life. Seek to make your life long and of service to your people. When your time comes to die, be not like those whose hearts are filled with fear of death, so that when their time comes they weep and pray for a little more time to live their lives over again in a different way. Sing your death song, and die like a hero going home.

I like urban war rules, but NUTS is also very good if you want a more tactically based but fun with lots of options games.

Also lots of good rulesets out there for 28mm historical gaming that could be easily adapted.

But for skirmishes i thinkthe best thing you can do is get rid of the your go my go thing... you want a system where you role at the start of each turn to see who goes first, the chance of someone going twice ina row adds a better dynamic, allow you to take more gambles which in turn allows you to have a more fun skirmish game

btw:

You're going to need more terrain if you want to play Infinity.

40K itself is basically a blown-up skirmish game.

We're not very big on official rules. Rules lead to people looking for loopholes. What's here is about it.

Sure, and I can remember it from the old RT days when the individual models mattered.

The issue is using small scale terrain with a large squad. If 40K didn't have the 2" squad coherency rule the terrain can be a lot more interesting, because the models need to be right next to each other. With the 2" unit coherency rule, piece of terrain such as the ones I posted above are too small to be used effectively, since they're sized for at most 4-5 models.

Games such as Necromunda don't have a 2" squad coherency rule, allowing for smaller pieces of terrain, which can make for a more interesting game, IMHO.

5150, No Limits (free!), Warengine (formerly Shockforce), the aforementioned Infinity and Urban War, Aetherverse, Rezolution, Combat Zone...

That should start you off well.

Oh, and the terrain is awesome.

EDIT: Also Ambush Alley and Battlefield Evolutions.

Guinness: for those who are men of the cloth and football fans, but not necessarily in that order.

I think the lesson here is the best way to enjoy GW's games is to not use any of their rules.--Crimson Devil

You can just dump the 2 inch coherency rule.

The question is whether people want more detail in a small-scale skirmish, such as counting postures (lying, crouching), ammo reloading times, and especially any kind of command and control. The standard UGOIGO of 40K does not work well when player one can eliminate several figures from player two's force before they get to move.

Hi folks.
I would like to suggest, Chain reaction, No limits and Stargrunt II.
ALL FREE to down load.

(I think Stargrunt II is what Rogue Trader would have evloved into, eventualy. But that may be just me.)

Maybe having skirmish size minatures in a platoon-company sized game causes all the confusion with 40k?
All the other games I am aware of that work at the same size of game as current 40k use 15-20mm true scale minis .

Obsessing about individual models in a unit interaction based game play, causes a lot of micro/macro managment jumps.

But thats another discussion.

I love using scenery like that. I've always found it easy to get people interested in playing a tweaked version of necromunda that lets them use existing figures from there 40k army. Often running it alongside a 40k campaign where the tweaked necro games have long reaching effect on the campaign (destroying comms outposts etc...).

Good times, one big board full of cool scenery with a 4 way fight between various elite/fast attack troops <3

Oh and as for other skirmish systems Warzone used to be very friendly to low model count games, as far as I know it has gone through a rules change since I played though. Also Flintloque has a very fast playing skirmish ruleset that could be adapted to a sci-fi setting (it is blackpowder originally), again I have not played in years and may have changed.
