I need some clarity with the Necron ability "Veil of Darkness". The problem is I'm unsure if you have to roll for reserves when you use the ability. As its pretty much an "active" deep strike (I guess.) and while it says something along the lines of "teleporting instantly" it uses the Deep Strike rules. I assume that you would have to roll for reserves, then deep strike as normal, but so far my group has just played it as instantaneous without the roll.

Also,
When Deep Striking can you measure around where your model is being placed to see if your Deep Strike has a likely chance to fly off the table edge(scatter and then x" off)? Seems a bit... corny I guess to me.

Thanks for the help, as always!

The key here is the phrase:

Emphasis mine

The unit isnt placed back into reserve (like eldar swooping hawks are) and so no further reserve rolls are made. The exception to this is if they are effected by a Deep Strike mishap and roll 5 or 6 on the table. In this case they will be placed back into reserve and then you will have to roll as normal. You have been playing it correctly.

In answer to your other question, the only times that you are allowed to measure during a game is when it specifically allows you to. Checking movement distance while moving and assaulting, checking distance after delaring shooting and so on. You cant arbitrarily measure stuff as that would give you an unfair advantage.

taking up the mission

If we were to play each other in a tournament, not only would I table you, I would murder you, your family, every woman you ever loved and burn down your house. I mean, what's the point in winning if you allow people that don't take the game seriously to live?

Ah,
I guess I misread it. Thanks a lot for clearing all that up! Also, I figured that. I was kind of shifty when he was measuring out the distance from his model that he was placing when Veiling. Anyways, thanks again .
