Iv recently been thinking about starting a third army if you look at the title guess which one. Any ideas on a way to start an army, such as what to buy and color schemes.

Blue and gold vostroyans could be very cool. I recommend buying some basic troops, finding a colour scheme you like, and then painting the lot that way. Never buy anything new until you have everything you own painted.

well for starting out its always smart to stick to the stand force organization chart. so get 2 troops choices and a HQ THEN go from there. as for colors, good god man make up your own scheme!!!!

Nice choice. Vostroyans play like any other guard army. Any variation of the imperial guard army works for them. The models to me have a cyberpunk feel. You could go that route with a more primitve theme: steam powered tanks and sentinels, rough rider cavalry etc. You can borrow from the empire range with this theme. I am waiting for someone to use the empire engineer mechanical horse in a 40k conversion.

They have a strong russian cossack apearance so they work well with winter scenery and Dave Taylors KV tank conversions. Fluff wise they have strong ties to the adeptus mechanicus. A friend of mine uses them in his admec army. They open up a lot of different modeling options.

I think the red coats with black hats color scheme works well. The catachan green coats and black or brown hats work well too. If you are looking for something different white coats and black or brown hats for a winter camo sceme, or how about graveyard earth or khaki colored coats with black hats.

I found this thread a while back when I was pondering doing some Vostroyans myself. I was a huge fan of this color scheme. Check out the thread.

Moz:
You: "Hold on, you rammed, that's not a tank shock"
Me: "Ok so what is a ram, lets look at the rules."
Rulebook: "A ram is a special kind of tank shock"
You: "So it's a tank shock until it hits a vehicle, and then it's a ram, not a tank shock, and then it goes back to being a tank shock later!"
Me: "Yeah it doesn't really say any of that in here, how about we just play by what's written in here?"

Recently I started doing vostroyans. I found the army to be really fun. The color scheme i used was Varying browns for the infantry. Lost of silver and brass for metal. The vehicles i did a desert Theme mixing the vostroyan tank paint scheme with yellows instead of greens.

I was actually thinking about using a green color for them except more silver than gold. I was also thinking a sort of modernized(41st millenium modern) napoleonic vehicles and things. probably lots of unmotorized vehicles, wheeled things pushed by ogryns or pulled by horses, steam horses lots of rough riders in unit choice.

I think that you should go with a good ol' Soviet Russia color scheme. Dark greys for the fur, a nice deep olive green for the primary and the scarlet for the secondary for use in red stars and other ornamentation. Also they should be nice and weathered, with bases that are snowy.

I think you should go for dark earthy colours and add more eyecatching colours for officers.

Just looked at the mechanical steed, with a little vostroyan and green stuff could be a great model maybe a rough rider sergeant or a pulling thingy for my tank...

I have never used army builder. My guess would be officially Vostroyans do not have Roughriders as doctrine choice or you did not take the doctrine for the roughrider restricted troops choice.

Roughriders are a restricted troops choice which means if you are using doctrines you loose this as an army choice. You can get around this by using the restricted troops choice doctrine. This will give you the option of adding one of the troops choices from the restricted list to your army. There is really nothing stopping you from using a vanilla IG army with no doctrines or choosing your own doctrines and including roughriders. I would suggest Attilan roughrider models or empire pistoliers/outriders for model choices. Empire pistoliers are plastic and relatively cheap. With a little green stuff you could add the tall russian fur hats to help them blend in.

I'm guessing you don't have a copy of the IG codex so if any of this is repeating something you know, I'm sorry.
