Subject: Rules for taking SM units from Chapter specific codexes?

I'm making an army that is pretty much by the codex Space Marines, but I'm seeing things here and there such as the Blood Angels Death Company that I would really like to add in. I'm wondering, what are the rules for adding in things outside of the standard codex like that? Especially now that they codex is 5th ed.

If you want to use the Death Company then you play with the Blood Angels codex. If you want to play with the toys in the SM codex you use the SM codex. There are no rules for mixing and matching the two outside of apocalypse games (which allows to use anything you want).

You use one codex to make an army. You don't pick and choose units from various codices unless specifically permitted to do so (ie, Daemonhunters and Witch Hunters, etc.).

K, thanks. Now I have to decide wether I want to run a SM codex army, or a special Chapter army... those Blood Angels are pretty appealing.

Also... hrm... I really do want to make my own chapter/scheme. I am a nut for customizing things, so would I be able to... say... make up an army, using space marines, upgrade them aesthetically with bits from dark angels and blood angels sprues, and use the blood angels codex rules, so long as I adhere to their weapon equipment guidelines?
If not... I'm sticking to codex space marines all the way. My Crusaders chapter WILL BE BORN!!!

You can always make your models look however you want them to, as long as it is relatively clear to your opponent what they actually represent. When it comes to the rules you can always choose to play your army following whatever rules you want (although some tournaments do occasionally force you to play the army your force is painted like, but that certainly doesn't apply if you're converting your models to represent a custom chapter -- in which case you can use whatever codex you want to represent them).

Awesome, thank you very much for the help. I'm making a Chapter that tries to be the spiritual little brother of the Gray Knights, and am following a similar colour scheme. I'm also adding DA upgrades as things like their robes which remind me very much of Templars from Assassin's Creed, therefor it is very thematically relevant. At the same time, I want to go off of the Blood Angels rules. Death Company + Chaplain? Yes please.

To re-iterate, upgrades and such MUST come from the codex you're using. If you're using DA upgrades you cannot take BA Units.
If I'm reading you correctly, by 'upgrades' you just mean bits from the DA sprue and your own color scheme, in which case what you want to do is legal, as long as you clearly inform your opponent what everything represents.

It demonstrates an effort made to be understood, and to make your post an easy and pleasant read. By making this effort, you can often elicit more positive responses from the community, and instantly mark yourself as someone worth talking to.
