... with the recent announcement that Mongoose would not be renewing the license for Babylon 5, there has been some questions about their current deal with Iron Wind Metals to remaster and manufacture the B5 line. This has been addressed by Mike Noe, president of Iron Wind Metals. From the Iron Wind Metals website:

Iron Wind Metals Babylon 5 license to expire at the end of June 2009
Submitted by Mike Noe on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 2:31pm

Earlier this year, Iron Wind Metals licensed the Babylon 5 miniatures line from Mongoose Games. After several months of prep, we began re-releasing this fantastic line of classic Sci-Fi space ships. Eventually, we planned to over-haul most of the existing designs. We began officially “re-releasing” these re-mastered ships in October. We have invested a good bit of time and effort into the line to date, hoping that the Babylon 5 miniatures license would be a long-time deal...

Unfortunately, a few days ago we were informed that, for various reasons, Mongoose Games has opted not to renew their Babylon 5 contract with Warner Brothers. As our license is tied in with Mongoose, when their license expires, ours does as well.

This is a possibility that we had known existed, as Mongoose was very up-front about things from the start, however we had hoped that circumstances would allow them to renew. Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case. We discussed picking up the license ourselves, but for many reasons this will most likely not be possible either.

Therefore, as it stands we will be forced to cease production of the Babylon 5 miniatures at the end of June 2009.

If this situation changes we will let everyone know - however, at this point that seems unlikely.

During the 6 ½ months that we have left, however, we intend to continue to re-master and re-issue as many designs as we can, and to try and get as many designs as possible available to the players, including the Fleet Action scale ships.

IWM increasing the prices will certainly stop me buying anything more for a dead system.

I'll hang on to my Dilgar, but my EA stuff will get sold.

Heaven forbid a company change it's prices when production costs triple over the last few years. Not that GW has ever raised prices or anything...

To be fair, he's not saying IWM are horrible people for raising prices, just that:
1) For him, or his gaming group, the game is dead
2) the prices have gone up

I think most gamers buy stuff for dying or dead system on clearance, not at a premium. I'm guessing there are pockets of gamers that are eating this stuff up at nearly any price, and they're the target demographic.

Yeah this was a real bummer. I don't see how the game is going to survive without minis.

With Hostile Intent has a nice line,

Also the folks who make Uncharted Seas, Spartan Games, is working on a new Sci-Fi ship combat game.

Looks like Ghaz is correct about the licensing... I thought I read a hint on Mongoose's forums that they were considering trying to redo the game with their own IP, but I doubt that'll fly. It's an OK system, perhaps not great, and I think a lot of fans like it for the B5 setting. It's a lot of it for me.

Working on someting you'll either love or hate. Hopefully to be revealed by November.

I also heard that rumor about Mongoose changing to more of a generic space combat game. I've got a ton of Drakh (12 Battle Points) and I like the system. I think they may be successful if they switch the game to generic space combat system like Future War Commander and Blitzkrieg Commander. That guy just writes rules and lets everyone play with whatever models they want. That'll give me a good reason to combine all the battlefleet gothic and B5 fleets for a massive battle! I'll be watching ebay for the coming sales.
