Game 1 is a slaughter, but Game 2 is more dramatic. Both opponents were smart players and nice guys. Comments and criticisms are welcome!

GAME 1

CSM (Me) vs. IG; Seize Ground with Pitched battle deployment

CSM:
Sorcerer in Terminator Armor, Gift of Chaos
3 Terminators, Heavy Flamer
5 CSM, Melta
5 CSM, Flamer
5 Havocs, 1 Missile Launcher

IG (approximation):
10 IG with Lascannon
10 IG with Lascannon
10 IG with Autocannon
10 IG with Autocannon
Basilisk
Not sure on HQ

First turn to CSM

CSM deploy Havocs on left side, Sorc with Termies in middle, flanked by CSM units on both sides.
IG deploys with Basilisk on the left side and troops spread across the table.

CSM Turn 1:
  • CSM and Termies run forward. Havocs don't have LOS to Basilisk so Frag a few IG to death.

  • IG Turn 1:
  • Basilisk whiffs. Weapons kill two Termies, who pass their morale tests.

  • CSM Turn 2:
  • CSM and Termies run forward, slowed by difficult terrain. Havocs move to get LOS to Basilisk.

  • IG Turn 2:
  • Basilisk hammers two CSM to death. Fire mops up the remains of center left CSM unit and pummels the Havocs below 50%, who then run 12" away. Remainder of terminators die, but Sorcerer takes only one wound.

  • CSM Turn 3:
  • Havocs, Terminators, and one unit of CSM are now dead. The Sorcerer fails with Gift of Chaos and joins the remaining CSM unit. I forget to shoot with bolt pistols, but they assault middle IG unit and wipe it out.

  • IG Turn 3:
  • Basilisk kills all CSM. Lascannon insta-kills Sorcerer. CSM is tabled.

  • Game 1 Summary: I've lost like this several times to IG. I need to change it up.

    GAME 2
CSM (me) vs World Eaters CSM, Kill Points with Pitched Battle deployment

I will call his army WE to avoid confusion.

    CSM:
    Sorcerer in Terminator Armor, Doombolt
    3 Terminators, Reaper Autocannon
    5 CSM, Melta
    5 CSM, Flamer
    5 Havocs, 1 Missile Launcher

    World Eaters (approximate list)
Terminator Lord with Mark of Khorne and Power Fist
8 Berserkers, Champ with Power Weapon and Plasma Pistol
8 Berserkers, Champ with Power Weapon and Plasma Pistol, Rhino

CSM Havocs deploy in building rooftop on left flank. Terminators and Sorcerer are center, flanked by CSM units.

WE deploys Rhino with Berserkers left flank (essentially opposite but hidden by terrain from my Havocs), and Lord goes with second Berserker unit in the center.

    CSM Turn 1:
  • Havocs glance Rhino for a Shaken result. CSM run forward. Termies walk and fire Reaper at Rhino, failing armor rolls.

  • WE Turn 1:
  • Rhino advances towards center and deploys Berserkers behind vehicle. Central Berserkers & Lord run forward.

  • CSM Turn 2:
  • Havocs fire a Krak missile at the Berserkers with Lord...so opponent chooses to take the 2+ save on the Lord instead of lose a troop...and fails for an Instant Death! On the left flank, the CSM units see their chance to get the jump on the disembarked Berserkers and charge! Unfortunately, I forget to fire the flamer or melta...and then lose combat horribly!!! Central CSM unit is wiped out and left CSM unit is reduced to 3 and flees! (darn those power weapons)

  • WE Turn 2:
  • Rhino tank shocks Terminators to the side. Left flank Berserkers, flush with victory, assault the shocked Terminators. In spite of Furious Charge, they inflict only 1 wound and receive 4 in return! Fearless wounds wipe the unit out. Central Berserkers advance, but can't make the assault.

  • Then...the store closed.

Game 2 Summary: I was in a good position to win with my lucky Lord kill, but one round of bad assaults for either of us could have turned things around. Great fun; thanks for reading.

if thats an approximation fair enough, but the guard list is illegal

I forgot to mention that we were playing a campaign, and he was allowed extra Heavy Support slots as part of the scenario. I don't have the Guard codex, though, so I didn't realize that this was a non-standard list until your post.

actually the think that's wrong is he needs 2 command squads (5-man squads usually). After that he can take 3-4 10-man squads & a basilisk.

Did he have 2 5-man squads in there?

    HS was not the problem.

IIRC in combat patrol you don't need to take an HQ.

If he only took 1 troop, then he only needed to take 1 platoon command squad. And judging by the points of the units you have posted, he would have enough for 1 command squad.

This is assuming you are going by the old "Combat Patrol" rules. If not, then yes, the IG army was illegal as you would need 3 command squads :\ 1 for HQ and 2 as troops.

If using the combat patrol rules then the Chaos armies were also illegal.

No 2+ saves or models with more than 2 wounds.

    Cheers!

We were using standard 40k rules with a couple of miscellaneous custom campaign rules (he had an extra heavy slot and my CC attacks all inflicted a base of 2 wounds). Looks like I need to buy the Guard book before the next CSM vs IG loss, er, game.

I thought combat patrol was 400 pts, also I thought that ordinance weapons were not allowed in combat patrol
