A few weeks ago the club played its first game of Ambush Alley...

We used the Turkey Shoot scenario in the rulebook as our first game as it seemed to offer us a bit of everything and involved the US Forces moving a sniper team into a designated location to go about his deadly business.

This is our representation of downtown Kirkuk...

US Forces moved into the area and quickly eliminated an insurgent RPG team before it could even engage them. By cunning use of terrain the US Forces were able to make their way towards the enemy unseen but did suffer two WIA from a few stray mortar rounds as they moved. These two WIA would prove to be the only serious injuries to the US Forces for the entire game!

The Insurgents await the infidels...

US troops forge ahead...

By a combination of fire and manouver, the US troops quickly eliminated several insurgent units and cleared several buildings closing down enemy reinforcement routes. Sadly the insurgents just couldnt seem to hit anything and when they did they only managed to do minor wounds and didnt manage to take out any other troops...

The US forces launched a two pronged attack on the insurgents and ruthlessly cut down all opposition, making good use of the terrain. Very quickly things began to look bleak for the Iraqis...

Very soon the US troops came upon the objective complex and through sheer weight of fire, and a few mortar rounds, cleared the building and moved the sniper team into position. After succesfully completing their mission, the US troops withdrew, eliminating two final insurgent units that vainly tried to ambush their enemies... Unsuccessfully.

The game ended with two US soldiers WIA and countless Iraqis killed. The victory were 20 - 2 in the US favour...

And that was our first game of Ambush Alley! I have to say it was brilliant. A simple but elegant game system that has enough nuances and little features to keep you interested and eager to play more. The game took about two hours and keeped four of us amused. We all agreed that it is a great game for the genre and it really promotes trying to use 'real world' tactics on the tabletop, which is a refreshing change. All of use are eager to play more. We are already planning yet more modern forces for the game... I really need a load of technicals!

Greetings!
Iraq Vet here, I Did two tours in country as a 19Delta Cavalry Scout (OIF 1&2 tail end of the invasion, OIF 5&6) and spent many a unhappy day ground pounding in Kirkuk with the 1st Stryker BDE.

A few comments my good sir.....

Love the way the Soldiers are painted in ACU Digital. And well, everything in general! wtg on the paint jobs guys!

Not familier with the rule set, but if you really want to screw with the Soldiers make IED rules.
For example something along these lines:

IED (Improvised Explosive Device) cost ???
Uses blast template when triggered.
Special Rules:
Hidden Setup: Place a marker of some type on the battlefield to represent the hidden IED. (Small Rubble pile, garbage pile, A Car ect ect)
Do not declare that you have placed IED to opponents.
Remote Detonation: As long as an Insurgant has Clear LOS and is withing 30 inches (or whatever is good for the game) he can set off the IED during your turn. (Shooting phase?)
No more then 2 IEDS can be deployed at any given time.

Also what scale are the models? 28mm and where did you get them from, same with the ruleset. Im half tempted to paint some up just for the heck of it. I can add it to the rest of my modern collection collecting dust on my shelf.

Glad you guys are had more fun then I did In Kirkuk.
Look forward to hearing more about your modern games!

We use 'Ambush Alley' rules... and all our figures are 20mm from Liberation miniatures.

Like it, I'll have to look into ambush alley.

Your terrain was good but is missing one thing- the huge piles of garbage on the side of the road!

How many models were you using for the battle?

That is really impressive terrain.

I have enjoyed the games of Ambush Alley that I have played -- it gives a really good "feel" while still being quite simple.

Probably around 20 US troops and 30-40 Insurgents.

Great stuff, BigP. Your studio put together an excellent board.

So was the game balance really that in favor of the US troops, or was it just a matter of the dice monster really putting the boots to the insurgent forces?

Generally Mr. Dice Monster.

We have a few guys in our club who simply cant score higher than a '3' even with d10s...
