my friend gave me a choas codex for my birthday but im not sure if its the current one
when you open it on the inside of the front page theres a landscape shot of a black legion choas army

That's the 4th Edition one So run and get a current one

Oh just use that one, it's much better and people don't really mind which edition codex you use.

i still use the d1000 table from my realms of chaos books and no one minds.

4th Edition is the current one, Don't go trying to fool the poor lad.

That said, I think the one you have is actually the older one released during 3rd edition, Best way to tell is check if your front cover matches this.

You have NO IDEA how much players cry when I try to use my unnerfed 3rd ed codex (especially Space Marine Players). Even if I've only tried it a couple of times.

Even worse is when I try to use Eye of Terror to field my cultists.

Though I think it's the thought that counts. He bought you the better codex, anyway. At least that's worth something.

yeah, sorry I was being a bit too flippant.

Don't listen to them pal I use the rogue trader rules for ig still but if they won't let me I use 3rd ed rules

Ok it looks like you're getting some confusing responses.

3rd Edition (your codex) - this is the more interesting codex, although you will not be allowed to use it in tournaments or outside of friendly games.

4th Edition (the latest) - The latest rules, they have less options but they are the current rules. You will probably need this if you are planning to play competitive games.

However, dont just throw your 3rd Ed. codex away, as it contains useful information and guides that the 4th Ed. codex lacks.

Also, I try and do the same KK. Although i never wanted to or used Furies or named daemons before the codex, i feel as if i have been assaulted by GW just so they can sell more copies of their Daemon codex.. Lets not get started on the legions...
