This came up in a game recently, so I am needing an outside opinion on this matter. Can the units inside a vehicle shoot the same turn that said vehicle pops smoke? Here is the argument:

The units inside the tank shoot first, and then the tank itself pops smoke. It seems to not break any rules as it is one unit shooting then the other. On the other hand. Do units shooting from a tank count as the tank's shooting or the unit's shooting? Nothing specifically states one way or the other, but generally it seems that a unit inside a tank follows all the same rules for shooting as the tank itself while embarked.

What are your opinions on if this is playable (legal) or not?

Edit: Never mind, the answer is in a thread halfway down the page. Any mod may delete/lock this one.

IIRC, popping smoke occurs at the end of the vehicle's movement, not during the shooting phase................
Units firing from a transport are a separate unit from the vehicle and do not count as the transport firing. They may fire at different targets, etc etc.

With all that said, it does seem that a unit inside a transport that has popped smoke can indeed fire. The Smoke rules only prohibit the vehicle from firing and do not address embarked units at all.
So RAW, yes, RAI, IMO, no.

Busy somewhere, airin' out the skin jobs.

You're indeed right according to the rulebook.

...it's still sheisty though IMHO. I wouldnt try it in a tournement game.

I don't think its Sheisty at all, I mean its a one time use thing.

I mean look at a Tau upgrade for like 5 pts, it gives them obscure the whole game and the vehicle can move and shoot as normal.

This one is RAW solid. The vehicle can not shoot. Nothing about the squad inside.

DA 3rd Co. w/duelwing 6000+ pts
Mostly tanks 2000+ pts
Ultras 3rd Co and 1st Co. 7000+ pts
Harald Deathwolf's Co. 7000+ pts
4000+ pts (Daemonhunters)
Kabal of the Hydra 5000+ pts
Skullrippa'z Freebootaz 6000+ pts
Plague Marine Force 2000+ pts
and not finished until I own some of every army

Depends on how far away the shooter is.......................... My deepstriking meltaguns generally have no problem with this.

If you look at the rules for Fire Access. It states that a unit in a vehicle can shoot at a completely different target because it is a separate unit occupying the same space. I would say they can fire sine the smoke launcher states the vehicle cannot fire. I would say though that you need to follow shooting from cover rules that if you are firing through more than 2" of cover that whatever you are shooting at also gets a cover save.

Thanks guys. In the recent tournament I went with the conservative ruling and did not shoot the squad embarked. Forewarned is fore-armed!
