Anyone know a good way to do the grid of checks on Goff Ork armour? I can't seem to mark it out very well in grey with a brush. Do people use custom transfers or a knife to carve the grid on?

Also; I want my Orks' skin to be more grimdark. Would Karloc green with Devlan Mud wash work?

People are like dice, a certain Frenchman said that. You throw yourself in the direction of your own choosing. People are free because they can do that. Everyone's circumstances are different, but no matter how small the choice, at the very least, you can throw yourself. It's not chance or fate. It's the choice you made.

Devlan mud should do the trick, I have no idea how they get the checkers on Goff's armor though.

you could take some painters tape and put it over the area you want checked after you apply your black. then draw your lines with a pensil and cut along them with a knife and then peel out the ones you want to paint white. then you can paint white without worrying about going over into the black.

your other option would be to use masking material for R/C cars, same principle though. you w ould draw your checks on and cut them out, then you have a sticky template to use.

I find a steady hand and a fine tip paint pen can draw the grid then you fill in the checks.

See above. You can also try drawing the grid with a pencil.

Here is a Quick Tip from Aventine on The Painting Corps that might help out.

You could also use the fine point pens from stationers to mark them out (0.5 to 1)

ive heard paint pens work rather well. also you could try and literally draw the grid with pencil first and then basically trace it while painting.

There are also a few manufacturers that produce checkerboard pattern decals (hasslefree comes to mind).

It really not that hard to do as long as you have a steady hand. Seriously a lot of folk try to make perfect even checkers, ORKS ARE NOT THAT PERCISE! You can get them close and not be perfect and they will look fine. I have been doing them for over a decade now so I might have some practice but just start with the white, do a square and skip a space equal to the size of the square you just made, paint another one. keep going and then start the next row in between the one you did on the bottom row.

Try to use very little paint you can always add more and the less paint you are using the easier it will be to controle it. Then go in with the black and fill in the blanks. It mostely takes practice. You can add delven mud or paint chips after the fact to age ot up if you like or leave em clean. My lads tend to be a bit clean but its all personal choice.

I never understood all the lining out and gridding stuff as it leaves you more crap to paint over and your sort of doin the same thing over again, shouldnt you just do it the first time round? Remember to do them small as we are talking 28mm here, larger if its on a tank or some thing. Hope it helps. Here is some examples
