Okay. So I'm moving on to some of my vehicles for a change of pace, and I need some opinions. I'm trying to settle on a general color scheme for my Rhinos (from which I'll derive variations for Rhino-based assault vehicles like Immolators and my Exorcist).

As my pictures above have shown, I'm going with a theme that favors the red side of Sisters' traditional color schemes (versus white or black, the other strong Sisters colors) for my army. However, I want to include a fair amount of black as a contrast/secondary color, in part because the combination is nice, in part because it's thematic, and in part because it helps my deep reds from looking *too* dark (especially when in contrast with the silver I'm using for armor).

So, I want to carry the red and black motif into my vehicles to give me a unifying sense of color. Now, I will also be using white to pick out some of the details, because I love the way it stands out against the black in most of the shots of the Games Workshop-painted vehicles (which are primarily black with white detailing) -- it just pops really strikingly. So I'll be doing things like the fleur-de-lis on the doors and whatnot white. Witch Hunters vehicles come with a lot of iconography on the Immolator sprue, and I definitely want to use some of it to highlight the ornamentation with brassy and white treatments on high contrast colors like black. And finally, on my more mechanized things (like turrets and the penitent engines), I want to promote a sort of gothic steampunk vibe like I was shooting for with the bolter seen above -- so expect a lot of brass on grimy black there, I think.

Now, I've painted up a Rhino (well, the skeleton of a Rhino) as a mock-up of the two color schemes I'm thinking for the base outer armor: it's one Rhino with two schemes, half and half, split down the middle lengthwise. Following are shots, and I'm looking for preferences, both personal opinion on which you like better, as well as whether that opinion jives well with my myriad of goals and considerations.

As you can see, the major difference is in whether I paint the upper tier of the top deck black or red, as well as whether the front armor is black on red or red on black.

My roommate thinks the more predominantly red option is better. I'm a bit concerned that it might be a bit *too* red, and starts to almost look like a Baal predator instead of a proper Sisters vehicle. Am I overreacting, and the whole thing will look fine once I slap black turrets and a big white fleurs on the doors on this thing? Or does the extra black on the top deck make it look more intimidating and grimdark and help to set off the red?

I have not voted yet.
Would be good to see other models in the army for reference.
I find those pics are from slightly too close for me to get a good idea of the scheme.
The paint is unfinished. This can make a huge difference as to whether or not the red or black is overpowering.
It is also very hard to describe which bits I would change.
It looks good to me so far!

First off, what is the red you're using? Mechrite or Scab Red? (If it's Scab red, I'll now have to change my SoB main color TYVM!) Anyway, I personally don't like the split half/half black/red down the middle scheme for SoB. That's my personal opinion and you shouldn't read anything more into it. I've been having the same problem w/ my own Sisters and how to scheme out the vehicles so I do feel your pain. I'd found a scheme in a book that I'd liked alot, I'd pass it on...but I can't find which book that was in. I'll post later when I find it.

Edit: Ha HA! Found it! It's in the 'How to Paint Space Marines' book, pg 91. There's a SM Pred. there that I love the scheme on, and it's nice since that's about the same colors I want to do my SoB in. Without the checks by the way.

Don't paint a stripe of a different colour across the front of your Rhino. I hate that, and so many people do it. Looks 'orrible.

I voted for the red top deck, basically because I don't really like having the black on there at all. Except for some metal and some logos, rhinos should be one colour.

It's better to simply be an idiot, as no one can call you on it here. -H.B.M.C.

Cap'n Gordino's instant grammar guide:
"This is TOO expensive." "I'm going TO the store, TO get some stuff."
"That is THEIR stuff." "THEY'RE crappy converters."
"I put it over THERE." "I'll go to the store THEN."
"He knows better THAN that." "This is NEW." "Most players KNEW that."

That's right -- I forgot I haven't shown my army here yet. I'm just starting at the whole painting thing, so I suppose I can co-opt this thread for feedback on that, too. Pics after the text of my completed Sister (I've got several in various states of partially done, but I took one through to completion as a template for color scheme and to see how it'd look finished).

Rymafyr, that's Mechrite on a white primer. I actually find that Red Gore looks about the same, but not quite as flat.

Alex -- Yeah, it's unfinished, I was hoping doing a rough mock-up to block out the scheme would help me settle on one.

Captain.gordino -- is it the windshield armor differing in color that you're referring to, or that the whole panel differs from what's on the sides? Just trying to clarify to better understand your feedback.

And, my Sisters scheme -- I liked the silver armor on the Sisters of the Argent Flame, but wanted to get red in there, so I used them as a starting point and replaced the color of the robes. As I formulate some fluff for the army, I'll be posing it as a minor Order split off from the Argent Flame.

That's gotta be scab red or red gore w/ Blood red highlights...

Yeah, on the Sisters themselves, that's Red Gore (over Mechrite -- one layer of Mechrite means I don't have to beat myself with coverage on the Red Gore) with Scab Red and Blood Red shading and highlights. But the Rhino pictures are straight Mechrite.
