I was looking at using a Chapter Master in conjuction with a special character for my HQ choices in my SM list.

My question came up when I was looking at possible loadouts. What I'm currently looking at is this:

Boltgun (combi-metla or combi-flamer)
Storm Shield
Articifer Armour
Hellfire Rounds

Now my question is, can I give him the Combi-Metla/Flamer Boltgun and still use the Storm Shield? Or do I have to pick something else like a CC weapon or something?

I like this because even with all these upgrades he's still only 175pts with a 2+ save, and a 3+ invulnerable save. And I like the ability to use orbital bombardment.

Since a combi weapon is a two handed weapon you won't be able to use the storm shield. Also a librarian is much better value for points than the chapter master imo.

Ok then so what if I just take a normal Boltgun? The reason I ask is because I bought the Chapter Master 4 model set and one of them is using a Boltgun with a sword and I don't see why I wouldn't be able to use the SS with the Boltgun if you can use a Sword with a Boltgun.

As for the librarian, he doesn't have Orbital Bombardment which is one of the main reasons I'm taking the Chapter Master.

this is incorrect

there are no restrictions on what combination of one or two handed weapons you can have. its perfectly acceptable to take a boltgun (or combi-weapon) and a storn shield.

sweet! thanks for the info, thats what I was looking for. Because I really like the Hellfire ammo for my Chapter Master since it hits on a 2+.

On a side note, if using a Combi-(anything) can I still use the Hellfire rounds with the bolter half of the weapon, seeing as its still a Boltgun with an extra attachment or is it strictly only for vanilla Boltgun's?

Combi bolters are still able to use hellfire ammo.

The definition of a combi weapon is a bolter with a special weapon glued to it.

you probably want some kind of nasty CC wep on that guy. One of the main reasons to take characters is to tip the balance in HtH. if he is swinging with a rifle butt, he's a bit of a liability, and wont be able to make back the wounds he will eventually lose in a fight.

hmmm... see this where I fall into trouble with this guy. Is it possible for him to carry, the Boltgun/Combi-weapon and still wield a CC weapon for HtH engagments? Or is it one or the other? What I mean is, can I have a CC weapon slung on the hip or back and the Boltgun in his hand with the Storm Shield in the other hand?

Its been awhile since I've used my BA's and 5th Ed. has changed the SM a bit with the new core rules and the new codex, just not sure if there are still weapon/gear limitations like there were in previous editions.

He replaces his chainsword/bolt pistol with things, which is his restriction. RB+SS means he gets no combi-bolter, but you can give him an auxillary grenade launcher if you want him to shoot still.

I know what the "SS" means in "RB + SS," but what does RB mean?
Something tells me your weren't referring to "Rule Book" or ""Red Blok."

I think I've seen a grand total of three actual WYSIWYG Marine combi bolters, and they were made out of metal, and had Sternguard welded to them. This bit is disgustingly rare.

imo i think it would be go to give him the storm shield power weapon or relic blade and the Grenade launcher and give the grenade launcher to the rest of the honer and you get at least 6 Krak Greanade to fire at the enemy in the shooting Phase(i think s6)and its assult so you can still Carge and Getting a hell of a lot of attacks off o yay if your playin Guard use frag grenades thats 6 templates that my take on that sweet ass upgrade if you make the honer Guard bigger you can have more nade launcher and you can take combi wepons with th Honer Guard any ways

o ya also all mariners count as having bolt pistols and it said for the plasma pistol you didn't have to trade in the bolt pistol it just means you have to chose wicth one you would like to fire

i think the biggest problem with the RB+SS combo is that once you add up the points it costs you may as well just go for vulkan. with WS 6, S6, a reroll to hit and reroll to wound you can pretty much count on all 3 attacks causing wounds. Stick him with a unit of assault terminators (master crafted thunderhammers!) and you get a wicked effective assault unit.
