i have been a hardcore 40k player for a while (i mean hardcore in the sense that it was the only thing i played)

so now that i am thinking of maybe warhammer fantasy or LOTR i have no idea how to read the stat lines can some one help

Fantasy statlines are practically identical to those of 40K, except that models have variable movement, so this is represented by the M value at the beginning of the statline.

LoTR is different, but not that different. Have a flick through the rulebook at a local GW store (if you have one)

LOTR statlines are very easy.
The biggest difference is that your shooting ability is written as the number you have to roll to win, and your fighting ability is only important in a tie over attacks. (You roll your attacks, the highest single roll wins. In a tie, highest fight value wins.) Also, armour and toughness are combined into Defense, which works like toughness- you have to roll to wound against it. Armour modifies the basic defense.
