So it says" If it is not a vehicle, each unsaved wound is doubled to two wounds."

My question is this and I really can see this either way but was curious how others see it. Say a plasma cannon hits and wounds 1 swarm that is vulnerable to blasts. It fails its cover save. That wound is now increased to two. So far pretty easy. Now that second wound is where my questions lie. 1. does it get the second save? (I say no. I would say that a 3 wound swarm now has 1 wound left as it just adds to the potency of that wound not creating a separate wound.) 2. If it is double toughness is the second wound carried over to another swarm or is it just lost as overkill? If that is the case and it would kill 2 bases does the second get a save? If that is the case wouldn't that just create a cycle of unsaved wounds that could kill a squad of 100 swarms if they were out in the open from one plasma shot? Seems odd but ya never know.

FYI I have always played that it kills 2 bases. However after rereading the rule for Vunerable I seriously have doubts if I have been doing this right.

Any help or opinions would be welcome on this. I do not believe there is a raw or faq on this but I might have missed it.

Let's work through the sequence of events:

1. Determine number of models under the blast or template as normal. Say we have 3 models under the blast marker.
2. Roll to wound as normal. Assume 2 unsaved wounds.
3. Vulnerable to blasts says that each unsaved wound is doubled. The two hypothetical wounds double to four.
4. Allocate the wounds to models. The section on multiple wound models says to remove one model per unsaved instead death wound, if possible. The four hypothetical wounds eliminate four hypothetical swarm models. (Unless the swarm is also immune to instant death, in which case the four wounds would be distributed as normal.)

So, it is possible to kill more swarms than you hit, but wounds don't keep spontaneously multiplying.

I agree with that part so far. However what gets me is. If the model fails its save the wounds are doubled. How can one model fail a save for another? Also at that point the wounds would fall after saves were taken so shouldn't they just be additional to that model not to the squad. It seems strange to me.

What you have said is how I have played but it still seems wrong.

Many swarm-type models have multiple wounds per base. Necron scarabs, iirc, have 3 per base. Let's say they get hit by a flamer and fail their save. Instead of 1 wound getting ticked onto the base, leaving two, you take two, and leave one.

That part is not what is confusing. What is if the blast is double toughness. Mostly how and why does it work the way it does. One shot killing multiple bases. I don't recall a president for this.

Honestly, I'm not sure on this one, but I would guess that you'd remove one model for every wound suffered (including those doubled from Vulnerable to Blasts), so if you had 3 T3 swarm models with 3 wounds each that took 1 wound from a blast weapon, you'd take two models off the table for a total of 6 wounds lost out of the unit.

This is how I have been playing it. However it just seems off. It seems like it is done this way for simplicity sake. It seems strange that an UN saved wound is doubled after saves have been taken then those wounds are given to another model who was not wounded? Then that model dies and is not given a save against it when it would in any other circumstance.

It seems cut and dry if it is not double toughness. It seems the extra wounds should be overkill. Kind of like a squad with different models. Like a 5 man squad with a PF. If the powerfist model looses 3 wounds they are not carried over. They are just overkill. I know this example is very different but it seems fitting with the extra wounds only applying to THAT model. There are or were weapons that would do multiple wounds to a given model. They however only caused multiple wounds on that model. It was just overkill vs 1 wound models. I suppose this is why I am looking to see what people think about this.

Pg. 26 BRB has your answer about Instant Death.

1) Roll to wound unit as normal.
2) Take saving throws as normal.
3) For each failed save, double the number of wounds.
4) If these wounds inflict instant death, you must apply those wounds to separate models FIRST (and remove the ID kills)
5) Leftover, non-ID wounds are applied in an effort to remove whole models whenever possible as well.

Trekari has it. This was also the case in v4 as well, but it at least had a FAQ confirming it.

Thanks Trekari. I believe that is the best step by step so far. I was looking for how it worked beyond what we thought.

Yep, it was in the old FAQs and they left it out of the new FAQs since the answer is now in the rulebook................
