Thank you for the "Ignore" feature. It's amazing how much better it is, when you can read a forum without experiencing forum rage. I've been poking around other forums of late (but you know they didn't mean anything to me; Dakka is always first in my heart), and that one little option has a disproportionate effect on how much easier it is to read here than elsewhere.

Thank you, also, for the "Skip to first unread" feature. Keeping track of where you are in a rapidly-increasing pile of posts is so much harder without it. (Buried feature request: it'd be awfully cool if you could set where the "first unread" should go to, particularly for those epic multi-hundred post threads.)

No problem, glad it is being enjoyed.

What do you mean by setting the 'first unread' exactly?

You'll be pleased to know that in a couple of weeks there will be a new release that I am working on at the moment which will add some more cool features. Skip to first unread will be added to 'my subscribed threads' and I'll be adding/testing a new feature that will be 'my viewed threads' which will work like 'my subscribed threads' except will show every thread you have ever read, so if you read something then mean to come back to it but have forgotten it or cant find it in the search engine, then it will be right there in your 'my viewed threads' list (also with a 'skip to first unread' link on every post). I've optimised the hell out of the database to make it work but if I have made a mistake then I'll need to take it off again though Current ETA for this all is the end of Jan. To keep the tweaks going, 'my subscribed threads' will be getting a simple 'unsubscribe' link so that it can be cleaned up for prolific posters too.

Just about 20 bug fixes and tweaks for the gallery along with some admin/mod tools left to go!

"Ignore" feature rated top by forum users.

Too bad the moderators couldn't see any of the feedback as they had too many people on their
ignore list. They have since scrapped the feature and gone back to the old "stone the
trolls" method of civil enforcement.

Did Malfred say anything useful?

As far as "setting" the "first unread" post, consider "The 'FAIL' Thread," currently at 176 pages. I think I last clicked on it back around page 6. If I click on it now, I'll resume where I last stopped. Assume I burn out on bad internet meme pictures before hitting page 176 (call it page 8) and leave to gouge out my eyes with rusty spoons.

If I come back later (presumably with a text-to-speech converter), clicking on "Skip to first unread" is going to drop me on page 176, rather than where I left off on page 8, If there was a little button on every post with "set to first unread," I could resume my self-destruction where I left off.

Is there a way that quotes by ignored people can be ignored as well?

I find that some people have the nasty habit of quoting other poster's posts in full, and having to scroll through a post I want to ignore wastes valuable heartbeats.

hmm this is probably a bit too few and far between to justify the time it would take to add the feature.

I considered coding something clever to do this in the past, but since any discussion immediately after the quote would be concerning the quote, it didnt seem like it would make too much sense.

legoburner:

But it might equally be the case that any discussion following an ignored poster could concern whatever that poster said. So I don't see how ignoring quotes as well as original posts is a problem. Indeed, what's the point of ignoring the original posts when the local habit is often to quote the original post in its entirety?

It is more complex because the software handles it in an entirely different fashion, at different points in the architecture, so it would take quite a lot of fiddling around to get it to all play nicely, and relative to the significance and overhead of the feature it is not a good application of development time when there are a thousand other things to be working on. The cumulative time of all users spent skipping over ignored posts that appear in quotes would probably work out less than the time it would take to implement the feature so it is not on the todo list for the foreseeable future.
