Some friends and I are getting back into WH for the first time since 5th came out. We are building up new armies and played a 500 pt game the other night. These are the two LOS/Area terrain debates that came up which we could not specifically find in the rulebook:
1) I moved (flat out) my wave serpent loaded with halrlies into a unit of fire warriors. The fire warriors were in cover and of course I rolled a 1 for the difficult terrain test for the wave serpent so it became wrecked (because it had moved flat out). So, the harlies had to jump out. The rule book states that a wrecked vehicle essentially becomes terrain, so all the harlies jumped out behind the wrecked wave serpent. The wrecked wave serpent blocked LOS from the fire warriors to the harlies so they could not be shot. Does a wrecked vehicle work this way? Can it block LOS like that? I know it counts as a 4+ cover save if you are in or behind it but if it blocks LOS does that mean one cannot shoot through it?
2) If one unit is in area terrain and it shoots at another unit that is also inside the SAME area terrain does the unit getting shot get a 4+ save for being inside area terrain or is this negated because both units are in the same area terrain (basically like 3 inches from each other)?
Thanks for the help!

1. Wrecked vehicles stay on the table and become terrain in all respects. Models can stand on them, block and be blocked by them, and vehicles running "through" them have to take terrain tests. Whether or not you actually want to tromp models up and down your carefully painted falcon is another matter, though. Now, here's where I get a bit fuzzy because I think I've used a skimmer exactly once in my 5th ed experience: the Falcon could be wrecked on its stand, in which case certain models would be able to see under it to your harlies while the Harlies could not see them in return without being posed in some whacky sprinter/Vampire stance. Furthermore, if you can see the head or torso of any of the harlies, you can shoot them. Falcons don't provide great cover for squads larger than, like, 3 models, for this reason; low, sloping armor blocks very little line of sight.
2. You both get cover saves, regardless how far away you are. It's like that shootout scene in Naked Gun where Leslie Nielsen and Terrorist Guy are shooting at each other from three feet away, unable to hit each other.

1. If none of the Firewarriors can draw LOS to even a single Harlie, then the Firewarriors cannot target the Harlies. If even one Firewarrior can draw LOS to a Harlie, then the Firewarrior squad can target the Harlies. Remember only the Firewarriors that can draw LOS can actually fire.
2. Yes, the targeted squad gets its coversave. No exception exists to the "being in area terrain" point.

1. I love having my DE raiders become terrain. They are actually blocky enough that I place them on their sides and can block LOS to my entire squad, if they survive the crash ofc.
2. Sadly yes...as has been mentioned. However, this is what CC is for.

I'd think the Harlies would be destroyed. If a vehicle moves (or is going to move) flat out, then infantry may neither embark nor disembark that turn. If the infantry are unable to disembark and the vehicle is wrecked, then are they not destroyed?
Other than that, the other posters have covered the answers to your questions.

Boss Ardnutz is correct, the harlies would be destroyed.
It's not a wise move to move a skimmer transport flat out into (or out of) difficult terrain while it has valuable cargo.

In one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 6", kill a few guys with his flamer, assault 6", kill two more guys with his bayonet, flee 12", regroup when assaulted, react 6", kill one more guy with his bayonet and then flee another 12".
So in one game turn an Imperial guardsman can move 42" and kill more than 5 people. At the same time a Chimera at top speed on a road can move 18"... |
